Ireland (13 Viewers)

many many moon ago, pre EU expansion I worked for chubb security.

they used to bring in people from eastern Europe on 1 year work permits, house them in company housing (which their wages were docked for) etc. I remember as a callow youth being shocked at the extent the company had them by the proverbials- the rent was higher than the market rate for example. For most of them it was a case of keeping their head down, avoiding trouble, and going home with a nest egg.
My neighbour from Poland said he was offered a job like that when he first arrived in Ireland 20 years ago. He turned it down. He said not only do the company take the cost of accommodation from your wages but they also keep your passport as well. It sounded grim

Yeah, there was a touch of indentured servitude about it

Bang on;
Chubb security are indeed cunts.
I know lads in the security industry that have worked for them and yep total cunts. Also, G4S for that matter aswell.

EDIT: the lads who are on legacy (well paying, pensionable) contracts are safe but they'll crush the spirit of any new employees immediately

Another old neighbour of mine worked for G4S and they were absolute scumbags to work for. He didn’t say why though

No one has the answer yet, because the situation is clearly kinda fucked.
The only way to get to the answer is by talking to each other reasonably and with open minds.
I have little hope that actually happens.
Has anyone tried bombing their houses onto rubble and killing their parents/partners/kids. Might elicit some empathy.

Minister McEntee on This Week earlier
We're expanding the list of safe countries and considering fines for airlines that allow people with bogus travel documents arrive in Ireland.

Between what was explicitly said and reading between the lines - there is a significant number of economic migrants abusing the refugee system in Ireland.
More than that, there is clearly a public impression that this is the case, so they are putting the minister on the radio to tell people they are dealing with it.
And they're talking about increased resources for towns receiving significant numbers of new arrivals.

The government is being spurred into action by what?
Dunno.
But the tone has changed since the riots, and you could suggest that the govt is very concerned about this issue politically, in an election year. They do not want a bunch of hard right nutter independents in the Dail making headlines every day. None of us probably want that.

Another way of saying this is that govt is quite happy to run an admittedly crappy system until it threatens them.

We probably all agree that we need a fit for purpose refugee system to help people in real trouble that need our assistance. So this probably helps that.

There's a broad impression in the country (according to polls) that there is no one at the wheel of our immigration policy. The govt is attempting to say "We've got the wheel"
The fact that these things are even being discussed reflects a new reality in politics here.

I've read this four times and I have no idea what you mean.
I know it's meant to be cutting, but not sure about what.
Is this Gaza or Ukraine?

Oh it was just a dumb quip comparing this to the Marraige referendum and how it took people to realise they knew someone or had a gay family member before they empathised with gay people. Maybe if these people knew what it felt like to be bombed or whatever, they'd have more sympathy with immigrants.

I want to deport white Irish people. Them lot are prone to being right shitheads altogether.

Those lads we're probably stuck with, long term

Govt going big on its stronger deportation policies - probably best described as 'chancers will be turfed out'
They are finally working on the communication aspect of the whole thing now that there's an election around the corner.
Priorities remain where they always have been. Their own asses.
Best guess is none of these 5,000 will happen - but they have their talking point now.
