Gigs of your life (1 Viewer)

FIRST GIG: MC Hammer, 1991 The Point

LAST GIG: Sigur Ros, 2022 3Arena

BEST GIG: The Flaming Lips

WORST GIG: Mercury Rev, Olympia. It was the Deserter's Songs Tour. I seen them twice on that tour 1st time was really good gig (at the start of the tour) and I convinced a couple of friends to with me for the second gig at the end of the tour. They were terrible.

LOUDEST GIG: Jogging, upstairs in Whealans can't remember the year.

SEEN THE MOST: Probably Super Furry Animals

MOST SURPRISING: Paul McCartney, 2009 3Arena

MOST DISAPPOINTING: Pixies in The Point, pre break up you could tell they hated each other. Close second to worst gig

HAPPY I GOT TO SEE: Zombies

SORRY TO HAVE MISSED: Prince 2011, had tickets but was unable to go.

Calvin Johnson in Whelans one afternoon. I left cos it was boring, then came back and looked in the hatch to see if he'd finished yet. He spotted me (it was not busy) and beckoned me in. Then asked me to introduce myself, as everyone else in the audience had already. In fairness, that was funny, and the definite high point of a dull afternoon IMHO.
This made me LOL. :D

HAPPY I GOT TO SEE:
Circus Lupus, Fugazi, Al Green, Deerhoof, James Brown, Maher Shalal Hash Baz, Large Mound, Ivor Cutler, Evie Sands with Belle & Sebastian, NoMeansNo, Terry Callier, Television, Astrud Gilberto, The Zombies.
What a list. I randomly saw Terry Callier in a jazz bar Chicago with the Settler crew, he was great.

I saw Circus Lupus at this gig. I had no idea who either of the bands were, but it was a memorable night.

I remember loving Sonic Youth at Sunstroke, but it was my first festival, I think I would have loved them if they'd shat in a bucket.

When they literally did shit in a bucket at ATP years later, it was one of the worst things I ever saw. Would have loved a go of a gig circa Sonic Nurse/Murray St
Yea it was deadly. shut up everyone.

HAPPY I GOT TO SEE:
Large Mound,
😥

My worst too. They went from good to insufferable in the course of a tour.

i saw mercury rev in melbourne in 2001. agreed - insufferable is the word. went from being a fan to never listening to them again

i saw sonic youth i think 5 times and but never say them doing a noise/improv set like that. would have loved to have seen that. i'd take the syr stuff over bull in the heather every day

I was at deadly sonic youth gigs too. One of them should have gone in my best ever list - we got loads of hits, a few songs from A Thousand leaves, some instrumental versions of songs that ended up on NYCG&F, killer version of Brother James. That was their last gig with their old gear that was stolen. I like Jim O'Rourke but I preferred SY as a 4-piece. Mercury Rev at Wittness in 2002 was surprising to me in that I was prepared for the worst and actually enjoyed it, that was the only time I saw them.

Dunno.. maybe wrong time, wrong place for me. I just don't rate them as noise musicians I guess. Lee was the only one with anything interesting to contribute in that way. Steve and Thurston just repeated their same few tricks all the time and Kim just thunked away randomly.

What did Jim O'Rourke do / play in Sonic Youth?
Apart from some noise stuff I've heard barely anything SY did after 1993.
I was aware of O'Rourke since mid 90's but the few things I heard by him made no impact on me.
I was going to suggest giving SY fans a free transfer to some old SY thread but they were all very narrow focus threads.
Apparently someone gave Sonic Youth their stolen gear back in 2005.

He played bass on a lot of the old stuff live so that Kim could dance around for those songs, guitar and bass mostly on the new stuff

FIRST GIG:
Watercress at the Mean Fiddler. But I only went to that ’cause I was tagging along with a friend whose girlfriend at the time was into them. First gig I went to of my own accord was probably Avail and the Bouncing Souls at the TBMC (Lagwagon played after but I had to go to work).

LAST GIG:
Il Sogno Del Marinaio in the Grand Social last summer.

BEST GIG:
Rush at the 3Arena. Voivod at The Village in second place. Bill Orcutt in the back of that opticians on Dawson Street was phenomenal. Ruins Alone way upstairs in that place on Middle Abbey Street.

WORST GIG:
I don’t think I’ve been to a gig so bad that was worth slating here. Shite support bands don’t count.

LOUDEST GIG:
J Mascis + The Fog in Manchester in 2001. Went deaf for days afterwards. Worn plugs to gigs ever since.

SEEN THE MOST:
Mike Watt, in various permutations. I saw Low a few times, NoMeansNo, Yo La Tengo. That’s all I can recall right now.

MOST SURPRISING:
Repeating here: Rush at the 3Arena. Voivod at The Village in second place. The Japanese New Music Festival (Makoto Kawabata and Tatsuya Yoshida) was surprisingly fun!

MOST DISAPPOINTING:
Black Dice were kind of blah.

HAPPY I GOT TO SEE:
Rush, playing Moving Pictures. Watt, every time. The Meat Puppets. Jawbox, twice! Bob Mould. Sleater-Kinney before their first break-up when they were absolutely on fire.

SORRY TO HAVE MISSED:
Devo at Vicar Street. An Albatross, somewhere. Burning Airlines at The Temple. Can’t think of any others.

First gig
A couple of local things then Mama's Boys( arguably still local) in the Ulster Hall in '85 I think.

Last gig
Jesus Lizard

Best gig
Rocket From the Crypt- first( secret?) gig in Europe in the basement of a record shop in london then that night in the garage.

Los Crudos- last gig ( at the time) in a community centre in Pilsen Chicago. They played the last official gigs the day before, but this one was for friends.

Queens of the Stone Age in the Empty Bottle in Chicago ( same week as above) it's on YouTube. Someone in the comments said ,75 people were there. I'd believe it.

And many more

Worst gig.

Well.most of the band's I didn't like anyway. Hard to say anything else was that bad.

Loudest gig
Neurosis in the Limelight ,genuine pain.

Seen the most
Loads of local bands. Pink Turds in Space,FUAL,Monkhouse ,Runnin Riot, and Therapy? All would be easy double figures.

Others that would be into double figures would be John Holmes, Los Crudos, RFTC, Month Of Birthdays and no doubt more

Most surprising.
Corner shop in Belfast. I'm blanking on the venue name, but tiny place, maybe 20 people at it. All they had out was a 7" or two on wiija. Crazy wall of noise. Super noce bunch too

Most disappointing.
GYBE sold my records after it
Slint. Just boring live didn't work for me. might have been good in a smaller room
