OK,

I'm looking at getting broadband.
Any recommendations or (more importantly) any horror stories?

Ripwave from Irish Broadband is the one that seems to suit my needs best, it's cheap, no contract and no mucking about with the house. Does anyone use this? How slow is it? Download speed is only 512k, am I gonna be able to download vast quantities of porn with this connection?

Cheers

go to the broadband section in boards.ie and you will find plenty of Irish Broadband horror stories. they suck ass apparently. i know those ripwave modems are awful.

NTL are good. i have 2mb which is to be upgraded soon apparently for 35 a month. 30gig a month usage policy which i always go well over without xtra charge. free installation and first three months free. i've never had any problems.

im on the irish broadband breeze lite 2mb thing. it was awful shite for ages but its ok now but i doubt i'd recommend it if i was put on the spot like that. i deffo wouldnt bother with the ripwave judging by the reports here. theres even a IBB complaints thread stickied due to all the shit people were getting. theyre all gamer nerds over there though and they seem to be particularly hard to please. dont go with IBB if gameing is your thing. its good for downloading all sorts of shite though coz theres no cap!

I'm in the process of cancelling my Esat BB at the minute due to their incredibly incompetent billing dept which has, in the last two weeks sent me two "bi-monthly" bills, one for e250 and one for e170, both of which they claim are kosher. Me arse. Bring on the NTL.

Yes, avoid Esat BT!!!! I signed up for the free trial they were running a while back. After waiting about a month I still hadn't got my modem, so I rang 'em up. Apparently I was mistaken - I DID HAVE MY MODEM. News to me! It seems the company they use to deliver them are tossers. Fair enough I thought and eventually got it sorted.

After my trial was up I actually moved to an apartment that had broadband already installed so I'd no need to sign up with Esat. I phoned em and emailed em, got confirmation that they wouldn't be signing me up and sent back the modem and stuff. Several months later when looking through my bank statements for the first time in ages, I notice that Esat have been taking a subscription fee off me for about 5 months! Trying to get the cash back was like trying to get blood out of a stone. I had to deal with snotty attidudes on the phone and while I'm always very polite to the poor souls who have to work in call centers as I've done it myself in the past, I had to lose the head with them to get anywhere.

AVOID THESE PRICKS LIKE THE BIRD FLU.

I'd a similar problem the first time i got it, back when i was living with the folks - went through the cancellation process and all that, then a month later i get a letter saying they're glad i stayed on after the trial yadda yadda. I ring 'em up and they apologise profusely. Two months later i get the first of five monthly threatening letters about how my account is in arrears and they're sending the boys around etc. Took me five months to get them to quit it. Eventually had to threaten them with legal action before i could get them to stop.

Service wasn't bad though.

I have bb with esat now for that past few months. had a free trial with them before, thought it was grand but did not want to be locked into a 12 month contract. so i cancelled. i then decided to get broadband plus with them as there was no contract ( I am waiting on smart telecom to come to limerick ) esat put me on broadband not bb plus. sent me a letter last week saying my account was in arrears and that i should pay up ( i never received a bill ). thing is they have my details so i should just be automatically be charged, but i now keep on gettin emails saying my bill is online. why don't they charge me. i was told that i am now on braodband plus but i am not sure, is there a way to check this?

other than this the broadband had been great.

If you think you're in danger of being charged erroneously, ring your bank and cancell the direct debit. For a while with me they'd say the due date was, say, june 24th but not take the money out until august 24th. Just get on to the bank before they take out anything.

i've had Irish Broadband Ripwave since Tuesday and i'm cancelling it Monday. barely faster than dial-up on tuesday and wednesday, the last two days have been slower. i've heard good things about Clearwire.

Still no phone line broadband out our way so were thinking of going wireless, best (possibly only) deal for us is with a crowd caled Ice Communications. €55 a month for a 2Mb conection, contentoin rate of 1:16. How does that sound?

Big, big love for Clearwire over here. After three months of fucking around with Eircom, Smart and our property managers, it's amazing to have a bunch of guys that will do next-day delivery and setup. Also, no phone lines and nothing to go on the outside of your house.

I'm sure these cellular signals are giving me fierce cancer, but fuck it.. I've got broadband!
