The strong implication from the customer service guy (without him actually saying it) is that Apple have put something in iMessage to stop it communicating with Android phones.

I'm giving them a week and then I'm phone shopping again.

The 'Send as SMS' option is on by default. Maybe lots of yanks turn it off if they don't have SMS bundles? iMessage goes over the data network.

Not sure what that means. I am not very techy.
But the Android I had on Monday worked fine. The one I got on Tuesday does not.

They have 'escalated it to experts'. Not sure what that makes the guy I was talking to. A hobbyist?

Looks like it's a network problem. I can only text T-Mobile right now.

Reddit says that others will come online after a day or two.

I still feel that Google should have known that.

Anyway, the texting thing resolved itself. I'm back in blissful non-verbal communication with everyone.

And Google have given me a $50 voucher for the Play Store, so I can get all those apps I've been too cheap to buy beforehand.

Ah, yeah. I use Whatsapp all the time.

But for calling the bank on a landline or a bunch of framers on mobiles, it's no good.

I'm just chuffed it's so cheap with this new service. The phone companies used to rip the arse out of you.
