iMessage only applies between iOS / OS X devices. Falls back to regular sms if not.

My iPhone sends and receives normal text messages as well. Though my sister-in-law bought a new Android (Samsung maybe?) recently and couldn't receive calls from iPhones but could make calls to iPhones. My mother-in-law bought the same type of phone at the same time and no problems. They ended up giving my sister-in-law a new number and it worked fine.

Shorter version: Have you checked that it's not your network/number?

I have my 2008(?) Nokia on O2 and it doesn't seem to be responding.
Not the best test case though.
Don't know anyone else without a smart phone.
