Phoenix From The Flames was always fuckin class really. I also saw that skit when it was first broadcast, and was pissing myself laughing at it then too. You are pretty much right about Baddiel and Skinner, but that show was very funny at times, for football fans. And Baddiel took the piss out of Judaism on it too, gotta give kudos for that.David Baddiel is the worst kind of unfunny, smug, middle class prick.
a Paddy comedian wouldn't get away with doing this skit on British Jewish folks.
having said that I watched this the night it was first broadcast and was surprised how much
the Irish media got upset about it afterwards - not really worth making a fuss over.
fuck Baddiel and Skinner's not much better.
Apu was always a blind spot in The Simpsons. his accent, culture and religion were
all repeatedly mocked in a way I didn't see happening with any other characters.
the story line where his wife had about 8 kids in one birth was a huge low point in the show.
the only defense is that there weren't many other immigrant characters on The Simpsons.
I still see a lot of this type of crap on Nickelodeon in recent years -
e.g. an unpleasant restaurant owner called Mrs. Wong has a strong Asian accent (Thundermans).
a few years ago my nephews were watching the 90's Disney movie Aladdin which was so
racist I had to start telling them what wrong with it during the movie.
I guess you're right about Apu when it comes to the religion and that too, although they did take the piss out of eg. Scientology as well. But then there's no comparison between the two, saying that I have two Indian mates who just think as I do, being that The Simpsons from seasons 2-12 ish is amazing including most of the Apu stuff. You are correct that when they actually started to give him more of a 'story' it got shitter very quickly, I wonder if that 8 kids crap was actually the beginning of the show gradually turning to total shit, it started around the time things started going downhill. The wife and 8 kids crap was pretty fucking dire for sure.
I wonder if the Seinfeld Soup Nazi would be considered offensive now.
