[Irish Examiner] Rape: our blame culture (1 Viewer)

Fucking terrible article. Is she really thick enough to believe what the people in the poll were trying to communicate is that "The rapist, it would appear, is off the hook."

She's being deliberately thick here.

In fact the people who are represented by the poll as beleiving the victim is partly responsible are the same sections of society who generally call for stiffer sentencing.

The line about some countries already having a state sponsored dress code is a good one though.

I didn't interpret that quote as meaning the people in the poll were saying that. She may be writing a little simplisticly, but the fact itself is not untrue. The poll perpetuates, and possibly even contributes to the continuing failure of society to hold people who rape to account for their actions. The poll/results/entire debate about this shit ever, doesn't talk about the people who rape, it focuses on the responsibility of the person who is raped, thus diverting attention from the culpability of the perpetrator. In the actual occurrence of rape (as opposed to the discussion around it) most people who rape don't get called to account for their crime, right? Most people who rape who do get called to account don't get convicted right?

Really, how is 'the rapist' not off the hook?
Compared to victims of sexual violence who are called to account for their dress, their intoxication levels, their flirting or whatever other incriminating 'rape me' criteria is attributed to them, the person who rapes isn't even within spitting distance of the hook. Compared to most other criminals who are snared and brought through the criminal justice system, the person who rapes is so far away from the hook he can't even tell what it is.

I don't really see a problem with her pointing this out, and I think she responds to the poll results well (however well one can respond to such a decroded pile of crap).

I didn't think that last article was particularly bad. She makes fair points in attacking the mindset behind the results of the Irish Examiner's poll.

But that mindset only exists in how The Examiner asks its questions and presents the data. Daily shock headlines based around asking randomers leading questions to fit their agenda and trying to eke a story out of the data cannot possibly represent the collective thoughts of a population.

I'm surprised they didn't run a headline like "Over 30% of population satisfied with all rapists' excuses EVER" because that's what it insinuates and that could never be true.

The problem with the poll is that it's not specific enough so the results can't be accurate. One question asked in the poll was 'Is a woman at fault if... (she) wears sexy/revealing clothing.' What constitutes sexy clothing? A leather belt around the breasts? A nice red cardigan? High heels? Boots? New Nike Airs? What constitutes revealing clothes? Jeans? Skirt? Lingerie? G-String?

Lazy journos.

All this goes to show, we should definitely start building Robocops in Ireland.

bollox, no matter what a woman wears there is never an excuse to force yourself onto them, where im living women were told to wear trousers going out not because they're less revealing but because its an extra barrier between you and them, what the hell is wrong with society when this is the advice given by the local police???

Ted Bundy blamed porn.
The Son Of Sam blamed his neighbour's dog 'Sam'.
That's why porn and dogs should be kept away from all men as they clearly don't have the mental capacity to handle these stimuli.
are dogs and their own penises not mans best friend. . . doesnt sound all that good!!
