General election 2020 (5 Viewers)

while the experienced SF TDs are actually first class negotiators and politicians
The great thing about SF is they will not be bullied by whoever they go into coalition with. The not-so-great thing is ... well, there are a few, but still this is exciting all the same isn't it! My Da says this election reminds him of his Da talking about the buzz around the 1918 elections

Is Paddy Power taking odds that there will be another election soon?

5/2 on one this year.

Interesting listening to Richard Boyd Barrett this morning, he seems very unlikely to entertain a broad left coalition, and I can see a lot of the other independents following suit.
I get the impression that it's not idealogically impossible, but that while the experienced SF TDs are actually first class negotiators and politicians, the massive amount of newbies don't have the experience to let it descend into anything other than a massive shit show - which would be massively damaging for the left in the long run.

On one hand he has to put out a stall to say he must be negotiated with and must get concessions, which is totally fair. PBP voters might give SF a 2/3/4 but they know what they want. His other option is building from opposition over the next 12 years (he's not going to out green the greens) or going in with FFG. He is very good in opposition in fairness.

My ongoing curiosity is whether there is a solid cabinet in the left at the minute, and tbh I think cabinet wise the best one is an combination of those as opposed to the FFG ideal of getting elected and handing out the jobs as status.

SF certainly have noobs, but FFG have full grown time servers who's name you hear A: at election week and B: when they build the road and that is pretty much it other than voting in favour unless it grates locally. The SF noob in my ward has been worked toward the dail for about 6 years so its not like they just filled a bus at a ceilidh three weeks ago.

That was my first thought. Like he's hardly going to say "I'd do anything for Mary Lou"

If anyone has a breakdown of those I/O seats, I'd take a look

Side take: It would be great to have a lefty in Finance to stop defending the Apple case

If it FF/SF/Greens was Mary Lou let the Greens have another decent ministry alongside Environment? Agri or Transport? I know it's v unlikely, but neither or those are SF's focus

It’s an interesting question. And gets to the nub of it.

Can they even make it work with the Greens ?– a lot of the questions they’ve had are on the carbon tax (Greens support, SF against) which they may or may not be able to make work.
But addressing climate change involves pain and inconvenience.
I dunno how as a Green you can implement that necessary upheaval in people’s lives, and if you’re Sinn Fein, keep telling the electorate how you’re going to improve their lot, and make their lives better/easier.

SF don't give a fuck about farmers culshies, so they can do a load of Green stuff if they just avoid carbon tax (for now). Close Moneypoint. Stop Bord na Mona cutting turf. Reduce the beef herd, etc

Joe Duffy earlier in response to criticisms of large multinationals not paying taxes.."But they employ hundreds of thousands of people, who each pay 50% tax (sic) ..the exchequer needs that money.." (paraphrasing)

Basically Socialist Joe thinks it's fine to tax the workers but not the employers

Yup

Voicing the unspoken con that the multinationals are here because we let them do whatever they want

Be nice to the visitors!
