best cover version in history (1 Viewer)

Nuclear War (Version 3) - Yo La Tengo
Gin & Juice - The Gourds
Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves - The Scud Mountain Boys
Tecumseh Valley - Steve Earle & The Dukes

I think the best Johnny Cash cover is either 'One' because it takes talent to make a U2 Song good or else Highway Patrolman.

that record is awful. There is no way those songs come close to the originals. I can only remember FEAR,Minor Threat and TSOL,but fuck!!! What were Slayer thinking?

that they were guilty of being right?

hmm, Tori does better covers than the ones on that album.. check out her versions of Angie, Smells Like Teen Spirit, Ain't No Sunshine, Ring My Bell, Losing My Religion...

Hawksley Workman - Revolution
kd lang - Jericho
Le Tigre - I'm So Excited
The Bag Brothers - Fallin'
Kings of Convenience - Free Falling
Nina Simone - Ne Me Quitte Pas
Pansy Divison - Son of A Preacher Man
Rasputina - Bad Moon Rising

I've only heard the live version of that. Is there a non-live version?

nope. it was only done live for the "Stormy Weather" concert, Waldon Woods Project on April 16, 1998. Wiltern Theatre, LA. But that concert was released as a CD. The recording quality is fantastic as it's an offical recording. Great string section...

a devestatingly powerful song. also "i put a spell on you" is very different from the screamin' jay hawkins original.

indeed it is.. Nina was one of those people who could really change a song and make it something utterly fantastic. Just listen to her version of "Love Me Or Leave Me" or "Don't Smoke In Bed".. fantastic..

The samashing Pumpkins - Landslide by fleetwood Mac

Tori Amos - Famous blue raincoat by Leonard cohen

oddly, I really prefer Tori's cover of Landslide - but the Pumpkins did a damn good one too.. .

and yeah, Famous Blue Raincoat is great covered by Tori - she gives it something that Leonard Cohen's version kinda lacks. ..

speaking of Leonard Cohen - there are about a million versions of his ""Hallelujah" - my favourite versions are by Jeff Buckley and k.d. lang

*lol*

yeah, I went through a few years of just never listening to Jeff's version as I got so fucking sick of it.. . Rufus Wainwright then did a version quite like John Cale's version, and then I got an Angelou Cd which had a cover of it, and then k.d. lang covered it, and suddenly I liked the song again. . .

I do probably prefer Leonard Cohen's original to be honest, but in terms of cover versions.. .

I should be able to think of way more, for shame, but here are some of my personal faves:

Ike & Tina - Come Together (The Beatles)
Al Green - I Want To Hold Your Hand (The Beatles)
Soft Cell - Where Did Our Love Go (The Supremes)
Sonic Youth - Superstar (The Carpenters) ; a popular choice!
Budget Girls - Glad All Over (Dave Clarke 5)
Tukuleur - Arfika (Toto) ; This is a French rap version by a group from Senegal. Mmmm.
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Woodstock (Joni Mitchell)

ooo, I also love Diamanda Galas' cover of I Put A Spell on You, which is on The Natural Born Killers soundtrack. Her voice is psychotically good.

Tindersticks - Here
Subsonic Legacy - Black Steel

I thought of loads the other day and I've forgetten them all now, bollocks.

I've a whole playlist on my iTunes devoted to great coverversions - as when they're good, they're bloody fantastic. when they're bad, they're Westlife...

Melanie - Ruby Tuesday
Pansy Division - Son of a Preacher Man
Ani DiFranco - When Doves Cry
