Where to leave the sad, broken, yet strangely peaceful looking bodies of young male prostitutes likely covered in DNA evidence in town? (2 Viewers)

with a follow up question, where to pick up fresh male prostitutes in town?

Now that I think about it, did Dublin ever have a proper redlight district? Plenty of towns in the EU had them, I staggered into a couple in South America and a few people inquired "hey bay-bee, you wanna date?" at various hours in various spots in the higher up streets in Manhattan. Las Vegas was hookery as anything all over.

But I don't remember ever seeing proper red-light areas in Dublin. That was just me was it? I remember hearing Leeson Street was a redlight area in The Sunday World so it must have been true, but I never saw anything there.

It's probably all online now. You have to join the Facebook DublinHookers group, and not annoy the mods.

"Traditionally", as in the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, it was the Monto area, there's a number of chapters in Ulysses where the two main characters meet there on a night out.

The Chris Barry phone show used to periodically do shows interviewing the women working around Benburb St in the late 90's. I'd imagine the Luas lines going in there probably moved them on elsewhere.

Oh yeah, nice one, Monto. Like the Dubliners song.

Benburb St. looks really different now than it did 20 odd years ago. Jeepers. OK...

Someone should do a book going through the history of prostitution in Dublin, going right back like. A well researched, well photographed and illustrated, beautiful book. Get the thing promoted on the Late Late, so Turbidy can prove to people he's still relevant, and donate a fraction of the price to Saoirse or something.

Given the thread title, the Phoenix Park was typically a cruising spot up until 2010 at least (as I knew of zoology PhD students disrupting rentboy business while they were out doing wildlife surveys).

Isn't that where a certain Labour minister was cough out many years ago??

I heard that one alright. Was that lads doing trade or just cruising for anonymous sex?

Phoenix park would be a bit bleak for standing around in for a fair amount of the year I'd have thought.

You could organize my Dublin's Prostitutes book so each chapter was a place, then you could go over time talking about when it became popular and stuff.

I reckon when the Brits were here, say the 1900s, the soldiers would have been getting local prostitutes. Then when things got a bit contentious there might have been a weird dynamic with visiting soldiers vs local prostitutes vs local others who'd be trying to annoy the Brits.

There'd be loads of amazing stories, if there wasn't the shame and secrecy involved you might get them.

I thought Monto was a pretty well known thing? The most famous red light district of the english empire at the time wasn't it? Visited by kings and dukes and all those sorts of pricks.

The little car park at the start of the south wall is a primo cruising spot after dark.

Don't know about trade..do rent boys work out of their cars?

no waaaaay. I was there loads. Fuckin hell. I never copped that.

Round by the Fury Glen in the park was supposed to be the hot-spot. I did a bit of off road mountain biking round there in the mid naughtys and saw some dudes mooching about.

the toilets in the picnic area outside my village in co. Tipperary have been shut for over a decade because they were apparently being used by gay lads as a cruising meet up point.

I think it was the largest in Europe. I remember reading something like that in a book about Ulysses.

And, eh, what village was this again?
probably every village in Ireland.

A friend of a friend did a dissertation on male prostitution for her degree or Pd. They turned it into a book. Probably out of print now, but this is it.

The lyrics to Monto would be very different indeed if the song was about having a wi-fi connection and browsing through irelandescorts dot com, or whatever that website it.

Someone mentioned Vegas above. I was in Vegas in 1998. I remember walking the street and lads handing out those free ads newspapers, but it was pages and pages of prostitutes. Like, literally 1000s of them. We were on a road trip and drove on to Arizona afterwards. One of my mates, in a drunken stupor, decided to ring one of them to see if she'd do a callout. Given we were about a 10-hour drive away they told him to fuck off.

Nice one. I'd probably be able to hunt that thesis down if there was a digital copy put in the library with the hard copy.

My book was more how the place interacted with prostitution over time. I'd be interested in how Monto was set up, where the Johns went to meet, where they did their thing, what the place looked like, what surrounded it. The South Wall carpark is amazing for example, I was there hundreds of times and fair enough maybe I'm not always the sharpest, but it never even occurred to me that the place was a pick up spot. If there were more things like that I'd think it would be interesting.

definitely the montpellier hill area still had some action going on in the mid 2000's - possibly pushed up that way by the luas from benburb/king st
used to go out with a girl who lived up there and there were both prostitutes and local 'hookers out' characters doing the rounds after dark.
they actually thought the gaff my missus was living in was a brothel at one point now that I remember it.. (house full of spanish young ones coming and going at all hours of day and night)

My missus used to live up in Beacon, near Dundrum. There are blocks and blocks of apartments there. She said that a lot of sex workers worked out of those apartments, and they used to play 'spot the punter' as some spotty college kid took an hour from the books to get his willy seen to, and would be wandering the corridors of their apartment building.
