Radioheads flicks the iFinger to iTunes (1 Viewer)

Pop is dead is worth 50 quid sterling on vinyl?

Excellent, totally finding that next time I'm home and flogging it.

There will be no problem getting a new Radiohead CD at all. Major label or not.
Word. And why would they press a few million. The last one only sold about 1.5 million, and that had a lot more advertising than this "self released" album will presumably have.

the new radiohead will sell an absolute shitload. getting rid of big label/itunes brings them closer to the money. Its all about the benjamins. maybe thom will finally have enough cash to sort that eye out

Hail To The Thief sold more than that in the USA alone....

I was just thinking this breathless 7Digital boosting was a bit suss. Do you work for them, Popeye?

nope.

I was hoping to start a discussion or get opinions on whether fans would prefer to buy the album direct from Radiohead or download it for free, illegally.

It's probably a pipe dream, but I'm sorta hoping that fans will prefer to support an independent band like Radiohead...because it will shatter the general trend back towards the 80s and 90s when the majors ruled the roost and independent/unsigned bands had no choice but to touch their toes at SXSW, IN THE CITY, POPKOMM or in the dublin castle, london to get a wedge of cash so they can give up the day job to make music.

The majors are making a fucking fortune from behind-the-scenes licensing deals with the likes of youtube/myspace/similar and none of that cash is making it back to artists....independent labels don't make a penny and their artists regularly sign away their Royalties when they upload their tracks to billion dollar websites like myspace. Ask any independent what chances they have of getting featured on itunes or youtube. the majors pwn the main online channels.

Fair enough, Radiohead probably don't need the money at this stage, so they are probably a bad example, but, the only plausible alternative to a return to a major pwned landscape (both offline and online) is if music fans support independent bands..by going to gigs and buying their music.

We need more bands to say fuck off to the majors and fuck off to itunes, so there are options out there...and I'm hoping it works out for Radiohead and they make gazillions off their next album.

Fine, just wondering. I think you're misguided if you think that 7digital are some kind of white knight indie saviour though. They're taking their cut, same as Apple. They have countless "affiliations" with the extant majors. They just anticipated that DRM-free downloads were inevitable a little earlier than their competition.

And you're not downloading the album direct from Radiohead, either. It's just a different big company and a different distribution channel.

I'll do what I always do with Radiohead albums: get an early torrent, then buy the physical release for the lush artwork.
