Looks likely to be Van Gaal as some sort of long term procurement-specialist overlord type, with some low ego coach like Martinez or Rodgers running the first team as his minion. Sounds quite good actually

It could, at the same time if you're hiring Van Gaal why not put him in charge of the team seeing as his record is probably at least as good as or probably better than any other coach Liverpool could realistically land.

could be wrong but i think the idea is to emulate Lyon and split the traditional manager's job into coaching and long term strategy. Van Gaal apparently would prefer to be the manager full stop and yeah, you've definitely got a point...

So, looks like it's between Rodgers and Martinez. Gotta say i'm not energised by either candidate. I think the best candidate who has publicly declared an interest in the job is Van Gaal. But then, he's 60 odd and would not fit into the 'dynasty building' mode that one assumes FSG are looking for. If Rodgers had had another year of Premier League football and managed to finish mid-table again with Swansea then i'd give it to him. But as it stands I don't think there's enough to go on for either him or Martinez. They're gonna be hiring someone with potential, rather than a proven winner, like AVB.

yeah i agree about Rodgers. as it stands he has a similar record to that gimp Phil Brown after one year in the prem. (not that im comparing the two) you need to see these guys lasting it for 2/3 years minimum. in that regard, martinez has some proven ability. was cynical about avb here a few weeks ago when I thought there might be more names thrown in but doesn't seem to have happened. without a doubt would take him over those two.

really? why? given that the vastly experienced roy and the title-winning kenny had us playing like total muck, why do you say roy must be better than martinez or rodgers?

Well, in short, because they've done NOTHING yet to prove that they can win anything or even compete at the level that would be expected at Liverpool. Why not give Pat Fenlon a shout at that rate, or Paul Jewell five years ago.

PS - I didn't say Roy was better, I meant the appointment was better

that is total rubbish. what have you actually heard about rodgers other than what you've read in the last day or two? hodgson came with a very clear style and pedigree and it should have been clear to the board (who at that time were only concerned with selling the club for the bank anyway) that he would bring a regressive style that would not even aim at winning matches and would potentially alienate the players (which is what happened). rodgers has a good record with chelsea's youth team before doing good things at watford and swansea. he is a modern coach with a strong aesthetic which personally i think is great, swansea were terrific this season and finished practically level with LFC on a fraction of the budget.

rodgers of course failed with reading, where an established team of older players rejected - will be very interesting to see how he deals with a few older heads at LFC. stevie g and the hollywood pass might have had its day. fingers crossed.

basically it's a positive appointment with an eye on longevity. i hope he's given a chance and not compared with king kenny at every turn. he didn't sack him. what he will have is an actual plan, which has been missing for the last 3-4 seasons. good luck to him.

and carnlough is lovely

Steady on there horsey. It's not 'total rubbish' to say he hasn't proven himself - it's patently true. It doesn't mean he can't do it, it just means he has a lot to prove. I also hope he's given a chance and I obviously hope he's successful.

sorry, was referring to the idea that roy 'just fucking hoof it' hodgson was a better appointment. by what possible criteria is that true? his teams have always played like muck and they have always finished exactly where their budget spending on wages predicted they would. he doesn't trust his players with the ball. he's 63. he won the swedish league 20 years ago, so what? meanwhile last season swansea had more clean sheets than liverpool, had more passes completed than anyone other than city, had one of the smallest budgets in the league (training in a local leisure centre). BR never once sacrificed their dedication to the ethos and they were fantastic to watch. he's no lightweight. anyway.

I don't buy into the Swansea hype, I've seen us steamroller them twice under Rodgers at Loftus Road (4-0 and 3-0), and we're mostly shit. I think they benefited hugely from the premiership being very poor this year.

They can also be very dull to watch, if there is no option in front of the defenders they'll pass it to each other until that opportunity arises. Some think this is football at its finest and purest, I think it's a bit of a snooze (see also Spain during the last world cup).

I hope I'm wrong, I'd like to see the scousers forget this horrible season and move on.

Well, i think it could really work out. Obviously, in the best case scenario. But it's a brave appointment, one for the future, one where they hope that a philosphy will be instilled from the bottom up. The board now need to be brave and stick by him.

Some players clearly will have to go. Charlie Adam for one. As someone said, the hollywood ball ain't his style, so i reckon we'll see stevie well up the pitch. Lucas will be really important and i wouldn't be surprised to see Joe Cole put to some use. Maybe even, don't laugh, Aquilani. Who's going to be our Xavi/Leon Britton? JonJo? danny Agger will love it too, starting the attacks from the back. It's quite interesting. Of course, i would say that. It'll probably blow up in everyone's faces.

Boring keep ball, with defenders just passing the ball between them, is the Liverpool i grew up on! If only the goalie could still pick it up.

He likes to play the right kind of football alright. But can he sign players ? Liverpools expectations are a lot higher than the shoestring budget, mid table fare that he's delivered....eh.... Once. Hope he gets you going in the right direction, I'm fucking sick of Manchester owning the premier league.
