I just don't get what all the hype is about.

*cue grayeyard-related gags*

yeah i'm not sure what hype you're referring to either
anyways i read this interview where he said it's not for everyone
so i guess he doesn't mind

without question, the most wonderful mosiac of sound I’ve heard in my entire life“, “a work of art”, “a transmission from a star in a galaxy far far away” and that “life and sound will never be the same again“. - Mary Anne Hobbs (BBC DJ)

This sort of thing...

His interviews make great reading though, I think he likes to portray himself as some Peter Parker-meets-Jean Paul Sartre type figure.

hm,
well i gotta say i think it's amazing, but i'd never heard of it before i heard it...

a mate played out 'southern comfort' (i think?) at his club in march, it instantly blew me away in the way that very few things instantly blow one away...
didn't realise radio one were bigging it up

I was the other way round, coming at it in the last week after seeing it mentioned everywhere. Not too well up on me Dubstep or Hyperdub or whatever (Warp/Rephlex would be more my electronic bag) but was expecting to hear something that would blow me away.

His stuff is alright, there's more ideas going on than the vast majority of electronic/dub/reggae/garage/etc but it doesn't sound to me like the landmark album it's being made out to be.

Its not bad. I suppose. Nah... in fairness its not bad at all really.
I would give it a few more listens alroish.

But, who I just discovered, and who is blowing me away, since we are on the whole subject loike, is this Burnt Friedman guy, including the stuff he did with the Nu Dub players.

I am thinking he is deadly these days.

I actually hate the first half of Untrue.
The last 5-6 tracks are okay though.
For me it's a really dull listen overall.
Much prefer the first album.

i really like the Burial first album - listening to it now actually!
what other bands/soloists are similar that i should look into?

Think burial is VASTLY over-rated - just deep house on another of its eternal returns in a slightly trendy guise - mind you I do like his whole secret identity buzz - very good interview in guardian a while back with him...

Mean time for those that like a bit o devil on their dubstep -

fabric 37 caspa and rusko - ####### thuggary all the way....
