I was at my daughter's 21st in Anseo on Tuesday night, which she organised, and two bands played. First was a jazz band that don't even have a name yet! but were really good, especially the piano player who's only 19 and fantastic. Like, Herbie Hancock fantastic. Second band was called Sell Everything and they were really good as well, very vibey. Gotta say, the crowd and all were a great bunch of kids, and sound too.

Sell Everything is a seriously good name.

They were great alright. Poor turnout though. Maybe 50? . I heard Belfast was only 20. Mates of mine in Belfast only heard about it from me.

This 18+ crap is really sad.
Terrible that live music culture here is like that. It's easy to forget this until your kids or niece or nephew is let down.
Because this only affects children there is no organised campaign to do anything about it.
Also funny that the mark up on orange juice is much bigger alcohol.

A week late but last week I saw some touring American hardcore bands in London - Destiny Bond and Big Laugh, with some UK based support in Flesh Creep.

I never really listen to hardcore but it's good craic love. And the dancing will never not be hilarious - at one point there were two lads crawling across the dancefloor on their bellies like they were special forces on a stealth mission.

Salif Keita in Cartagena (Spain). Part of a (for want of a better word) world music festival that's happening here over the next two weeks called Mar De Musicas. This was ok. Keita is old and doing pretty sedate stuff. Some excellent musicians with him and his voice is amazing but enjoyment somewhat marred by some of the punters engaging in some ludicrous "dancing". New-age types thinking they are communing with the griots of West Africa or something.

Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 are on tonight but I'm not sure I'll be able to go. Sad face.

Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 in Cartagena (Spain). I did get to go after all. Happy face. They were playing in a beautiful outdoor auditorium halfway up the hill up the castle in the centre of town. We got there a bit late (show started at 11pm) so missed the first 15 minutes or so. An absolutely incredible gig. Superb band, amazing grooves, brilliant ensemble playing. Seun Kuti is a really charismatic performer and this is proper afrobeat - carrying on the Fela tradition. I had a massive grin plastered to my face for the whole set and was dancing my ass off (which I rarely do).

Evening was almost ruined though by staying for the Ezra Collective's set, which was right after (why, oh why?). These guys are absolute garbage. Fun for the first 10 minutes but then you realise that this is all they do. Watered down, lowest common-demoninator, one-dimensional shite. Takes all the worst bits of jazz, afrobeat and dance music and puts them together into something that's way less than the sum of its parts. Audience lapped it up.
