General election 2020 (5 Viewers)

How do you do it without many of the consultants fucking off elsewhere? I don't think it's a circle that can be squared unless they are offered massive money to give up/severely curtail private practice.
Have they considered offering massive money to Doctors?

I wonder how much the public service pays for medicine(s) in Ireland, do they use the clout of the entire country to get a discount or just pay whatever they're asked to pay so as not to interfere with the market.

Dublin South Central getting exciting. O'Snodaigh (SF) and Brid Smith in. 2 more seats to fill and it looks possible they might be Joan Collins + the Green guy which would mean a solid left (ish) result and both FG and FF booted out.

What are those? I really don't know.

I mean, beyond very high rents.
Ah it's a macro problem, financialization in general. The simple answer is you have to have a government willing to say no to letting the markets decide everything. Lest we forget, Ireland on paper is doing great, we swallowed the austerity measures and have been rewarded with 5 years of strong GDP growth, proof that the system works!

I'm gonna read Grace Blakely's book (awful, awful cover) and get back to you.

There's also a long piece about it here: The Financialisation of the Housing Market – Ann Pettifor

Interesting prediction of the problems that arise:

Second, rising intergenerational tension – between those safely housed, and the millions that are not – leads to social unrest and political instability.

RE: housing - worth listening to this which sorta explains how we got from social housing to multi generational mortgages and shareholder landlords.

The possible upside to institutional landlords is that you could hopefully regulate them the way they're starting to in Berlin. Like all these REITS etc. are in a cluster now. Just takes the political will to do it.
That and the AirBnb market - pass the regulations, but also implement them.

Out of a top 10 list of those with the most first preference votes the only one that isn't Sinn Féin is Michael-Healy Rae. The next non-shinner in the list is Lowry in 16th.

huh, with the elimination of noel rock (FG) in dubNW, the PBP candidate has leapfrogged the FF candidate - i would have guessed the FG votes would transfer to FF quicker than PBP, but that doesn't seem to be the case?
if this pans out, i think it will be one of the constituencies without an FF or FG TD.

FF candidate has just been eliminated. Presumably a lot of hers will transfer to FG so I wouldn't be getting too excited but that would be class alright. Those two are in front at least for now.

as has been pointed out on twitter, this is more likely from GP/lab transfers than FG, so probably a false dawn.

Was in college yesterday and a woman there said in all seriousness that she thought it was disgraceful that young people weren't voting FFG because it meant that they were forgetting their civil war history. I thought, to myself privately, that that was a really fucking stupid reason to vote for anyone in a present day election.

Am I right or is there some major political thinking that I'm just not grasping here?

I should that this woman was around my age (38) and not some old codger.

FF transfers are pretty wide so far. likely to be a level enough boost for all, and a certain amount of anyone but FG.

Did she mean that all voting for all time should be based on the particulars of politics in the 1920's?

It's a generational shift among other things but if FF and FG are no longer guaranteed to to pass the ball between themselves ad infinitum I think that's a good thing. Politics shouldn't be about party loyalties or political personalities either but issues and policies.
