Your work situation (8 Viewers)

They've brought a new head of my department in to explore and examine "inefficiencies". There's talk of changing our whole business model. Also talk of moving operations to a cheaper "geo", as they call it.

Not for the first time I'm wishing I'd saved more over the years.

Have you triaged your memorabilia collection?
Can't sell - might sell - will sell

Kidding aside, genuinely sorry to hear this, Johnny

Thanks. I have created a spreadsheet to catalogue my stuff. I'd need AnnPost to set it up properly though.
It's mainly for my girlfriend so if I die suddenly she will understand my shed is full of valuable stuff and she won't throw everything in a skip. Although by that point I'll be past caring.

What the fuck is wrong with people?
I'm a little like that.
We have 5am workout classes here in the work gym. I know some of my co-workers send and answer emails before that.
I don't think I'll ever figure out what's wrong with me though.

Maybe she's being considerate, trying to stay on your schedule. Better than getting an email at 4am Ireland time?

Sometimes my colleagues in Ireland send mail at 1am or times like that but I think it is because they are working from home, have kids and need to make up for time missed during the day. They may have flagged this possibility with managers or something, I dunno. Nobody every mentions or complains about it, it guess it can be good flexibility for people who can't stick to time windows.

If you try and send early or late emails, we have an automatic flag on Outlook "Consider sending this email during the recipient's business hours"
If I'm working on anything at the weekend, I put a delayed send on it, so it arrives first thing Monday instead.

I suppose there's no functional difference between going to bed at sunset and getting up in the dark versus getting up a dawn and going to bed in the dark ... but most people do the latter, so surely the former is rather socially isolating? How do you hang out with anyone if you're going to bed when most people are just finished washing up after the dinner?

Really good question.
I never do it (hang) on weekdays.
Like it would have to be a really special gig for me to go to it Mon-Thurs.
I only see people at weekends. Or on mornings - I have early workout groups most weekday mornings, and that's my socialising outside of work for weekdays. I think it's the same for most of the people in the groups. We've all shifted our schedules.
Except for the 20somethings, who can do both. They need it more though (the hangs).

Although it's increasingly likely that AI is going to put me out of a job it's a lifesaver for helping me create performance goals for my direct reports

They have cancelled the 5am classes
I liked the classes - but I will not miss those early starts tbh

Hello,

We are reevaluating the Tuesday / Thursday 5 AM and Wednesday 4 PM / 5 PM fitness classes in the studio.

The Thursday 12 PM Functional Fitness class with Joel will be the only weekly class for the next couple of weeks.

We will update you when additional classes are back on the schedule.

Thank you for your understanding!

Those people can get fucked. Trying to make it look like they’re working late, putting pressure on everyone else

The Purpose of Work:

Why do we build particle accelerators? Why do we have restaurants? Why do we go to work every day? We think we go to our respective jobs all day, every day, to make money. But the point is to be happy. That's it. A restaurateur wants to make money so they can have a home and feed their family and do the things they want to do. An engineer working on a space ship goes to work to make money so they can have a home and feed their family and do the things they want to do. The fact that civilization has set up a system whereby we exchange money to make things happen and make everyone go to work in the process doesn't change that the end result of work is supposed to be happiness.
Space travel, quarterly profits, production quotas... none of it really matters. It's just a game. It's giving us all something to do while we're here on Earth. We need to fool ourselves into thinking that's not the case insofar as it's necessary to keep the game running, but we must also remind ourselves from time to time that deep down, the satisfaction, self growth, and happiness are the only really important things, and the instant a job gets to be artificially stressful (e.g. due to artifices of bureaucracy and not from challenges intrinsic to the work), the managers have steered the organization poorly.

A lot of my clients are in hospitality so I get stuff from them as all sorts of mad times. Fuck 'em if they want a response outside 9-5 Mon-Fri,

TBH outside 10-5 in reality I try to take that first hour for figuring out what I'm doing with my day.
