What gig did you go to last night? (15 Viewers)

john cale. undoubtedly an impressive performance. voice still very strong and decent band, great visuals. overall though, i enjoyed it in parts only. not blown away. highlight was probably heartbreak hotel

Last Wednesday I took my Daisy to see Lola Young in Glasgow...me and the other 50 dads in attendance agreed it was a great show and Lola is a superstar

Tye next day we went to an organ recital in Kelvingrove museum..which was deadly.. highlight..rite of spring

And the following night we went to kirstys birthday party in Maryhill and saw SEGADETH ..who are a 7 piece outfit playing sega mega drive music. Incredible
And SLOBLIN. who are a 4 piece goblin rock combo who have to be heard to be believed..and believe I did.

We were gonna go see the Blockheads in Edinburgh the next night but I wasn't able.. I was worn out

Went to the Crash Ensemble's Blue Haze of Deep Time in NCH last night. Part of the New Music Dublin festival. It was class. This was a 'promenade performance' which moved around the building. First time I've been at anything like that. The whole thing was composed by Jonathan Nangle and based on the sounds of the ocean.

The gig started in the foyer, with field recordings, then moved up to the balcony where a mini ensemble played for around 10 minutes, then we were lead into the Carolan Room for a light show with more field recordings. Then next door into the Studio for a longer, full ensemble performance (around half hour maybe?). And finally we were lead back down to the foyer for the conclusion with another smaller group of 4/5. The whole thing was around an hour, but flew by.

What could have been a gimmick was actually great. And the album is great too.

i was at that thurston moore thing in april. sadly, it wasn't good. in stark contrast to his whelans gigi with his band in 2023 (which was brilliant)

Yeah alright it was an open mic night. But it was good. We thought the regular Wednesday had died with that pub closing for renovations. That pub has reopened, but doesn't have a stage yet. So the open mic has moved to another pub. Usually a quite high standard. The occasional dud, the occasional wildly amazing surprise. I am very glad it's back.

You don't need to read on if you don't want to, but:

That pub is a big cavernous hipster-leaning place. But somehow it works. Some people can sit around that side of the room listening to the music, and if you don't want to listen to that, there's plenty of room left for you to sit over the other end of the room or the beer garden. The last pub that hosted that night didn't have that. Which was good or bad, depending on which brave soul got on the stage.
The performers, who made up most of the room, thought it could actually be a really good move. One of the performers said the location was much better which I didn't think about. But he's correct, it's next to the station.

Bumping into lots of people I haven't seen in ages was nice.

Weirdly, since the staff weren't used to this imported crowd (It's a lovely crowd, but odd, and the staff must have heard rumours), or live music, so one walked over to me. I was indeed having a hipster business-ish, but genuine conversation, and he says "Excuse me! Would you mind not smoking in the pub please?" I obviously wasn't smoking inside the pub, I was in his eyeline between where he was standing and the smoking area, and he made assumptions. Glad to know where I stand here at least. They'll be better, the open mic will get better. It will be better.

Muro, with Special branch, Hunger pains and Mana in Bohs. Great gig
Had to leave about 11:44 only about 7 songs into MURO from Bogota's set.
Pity 'cause they were brilliant.
Gigs at Bohs need to put bands on who have traveled about 10:30.
All the bands were really good.
The Muro hombres I spoke to were great -
Every Colombian thing I brought up they were happy to talk about:
Old bands like Herpes, Confusion, Parabellum, Ataque de Sonido, I.R.A. (means heart attack in Spanish), how to say Medellin properly (Meda-jean), gentrification in Medellin, what is the weather like in Bogota? indigenous rights and Colombian sports legends Carlos Valderrama, Rene Higuita + cyclists Luis 'Lucho' Herrera and Fabio Parra and lots of other cool stuff.
Some of best people I've ever met.

These kind of gigs always run late because of 'punk time' - people in the bands or organising the gig frequently turn up late, delaying the whole bill.
People like yourself don't get to see a full set by a band from overseas because other people aren't arsed sticking to schedules.

Sometimes changing the order of bands can be a good thing. But lots of people think the travelling band must play last. Even if it means less people see them and some of those who do are too drunk to remember.

I feel sorry for the band when some of crowd have had to leave for buses. Changing the order isn't too hard if a gig is over running.
There was a problem with mixing desk at the start of the gig but it was sorted as quickly as possible - I think someone had to fetch a new one but it was done in 15 odd minutes.

If a gig in Bohs says ''touring band' - 10.30pm' you can be pretty much guaranteed they won't be on until 11pm or later.
