the RTE thread (3 Viewers)

It is 3 days since a fire that killed 10 people, including babies and a pregnant woman.
There was nothing about this on Morning Ireland this morning.
Had to do a double-take as I remembered them talking to a woman this morning. Only for a few mins though.

I could have sworn they were talking about it, I changed over to Lyric as that story is overwhelming me at the moment, can't even begin to imagine so much loss to a family and community.

You think they were the wrong kind of South Dubliners?

Just that some tragedies are handled differently to others.

I only listened to the first hour and I didn't see anything listed for the second.

Maybe the 'timing' contributes too- we had a garda shot dead the next day, two huge sporting occasions and a budget to come this afternoon (the first 'non-austerity' budget since 2007), all big stories.
Oh, for sure.
But there was plenty of room in the first hour for the Aer Arann story, David Drumm and an in-depth look at the state of child care.

There won't really be any news from that story until the fire report is published, or hopefully not inasmuch a fingers crossed no one else dies from injuries. But I'm sure RTE will be grief-porning the fuck out of it when the funerals come around.

No doubt.

Berkeley was still the lead story 4 days after the event and there were multiple pieces on it. It was pretty much the first hour of the show.
Both horrific tragedies, but we divvy up our grief differently depending on the class of people that are involved is all I'm saying.
I'm not in Ireland, but there seemed to be a far greater sense of national mourning on the balcony collapse.
Yesterday - the first full news day after the tragedy - we had no actual reporting from Carrickmines, just a vox-pop and then a call-in to the studio from someone (about the book of condolences).

I'm not disagreeing that some are more equal than others when it comes to coverage but Berkeley was an ongoing story, in Glenamuck it was known within twelve hours that 10 had died and I don't think anymore deaths will be forthcoming so there's a small difference between the two.

The stories are quite different, for sure.
But do you think that a fire that killed 10, including babies and a pregnant woman, in a TCD dorm or at the Electric Picnic or whatever would be after the Aer Arann contract and an extended piece on creches three days later?
Cathal McCoille was laughing as he introduced the sports yesterday right after the Carrickmines story.

I don't want to sound like I'm having a massive go here, just something I can't help noticing.

Boom
Literally 10 minutes after I posted that, this popped up

Objections to site chosen to house Carrickmines fire survivors

Nimbys to the rescue!

This shit is on!!!
Residents on Tuesday said that while “you’d have to be sad for them,” the surviving family members of those who died were “not wanted here”.

The concern here for the kids is touching
“It’s just not a suitable site for Travellers. It’s too small and we’re already on top of each other here. No-one can object to people living somewhere. Everyone has a right to live somewhere but it’s just too close to our houses. It wouldn’t be safe for them either. Their kids would be rambling out into the road and cars could be driving or reversing around. Bin trucks too.”

You certainly have a point, the Berkeley tragedy was young, photogenic children (basically) from the 'elite' class whereas travellers are, well travellers- a group on the margins of society, whether that's by choice or design.
I only scanned todays print edition of the Times and it had just one story on the Glenamuck story, its pretty shocking given the magnitude of it, I can't recall the last time ten people died in such a manner in this country.
Those locals should be ashamed of themselves but its a prevalent attitude in DLR, the local council was slammed recently over their failure to provide adequate housing for traveller families. They've a number of sites earmarked for traveller accommodation but they've been so for years with no sign of implementation. The defence is that the children of many locals can't afford to live in their home area so why should anyone be given free/subsidised housing?
