Golden opportunity for 2fm to become good.
Inclined to agree. Like why don't they get a 21st century Fanning in. The Foggy notions lad or someone else like that/

I think the idea though is that 2FM was good before these departures
At least good for the people that want to listen to that kind of thing
Like it was getting decent listenership

Everyone I talked to about this said they need more Creedo and John Kelly types. But I think the youth format deals in personalities and craic now. Like TikTok in audio form.

Music and radio are no longer what they were.
I think it's the worse for it. But what can you do?

2 FM was always crap during the day.
In late 80's it was almost like the whole new wave era never happened.
Other than Madness, The Police or Blondie all the old hits would be Billy Joel, Chicago, 10cc, Bee Gees etc. or if you were lucky Queen or Steely Dan.

Loads of Stock Aitken and Waterman, Phil Collins, Whitney, Bros, etc.
Silly celebrity stories on news bulletins but not to the same extent as now.

I never heard songs like Tainted Love, Poison Arrow, Love Action, Ghost Town etc etc. until the 90's when I heard them on MTV.

Does 2FM have many specialist shows now?? I can't remember the last time I voluntarily listened to it.
I remember guys off 2XM doing an old school rap programme getting a one off slot in 2000's they played Ice T, Scary Eire etc.

I'm not sure they've any kind of structure in which they could restructure but in my fantasy version of events they'd get people who know how to lead things and with a sense of identity that isn't an emulation of Uk/USA style broadcasts. Radio is still one of the easiest things to listen to when you aren't screen tied.
I suspect they'll just hire 5 people offf instagram or something though.

Things I remember about 2FM, not because I particularly liked them, but because they seemed to catch the zeigeist, or something : Ian Dempseys breakfast show with zig and zag, The Gerry Ryan Show, Larry Gogan's Golden Hour and the Just a minute quiz, Dave Fanning. I also haven't listened to it since the early 90s.

It's because they'd no competition really, even before devices and the internet, it took a hell of a long time for any other commercial radio station to legally get on the air. The pirate stations of the 80s were mostly limited to Dublin, so they'd the rest of the country to reap their listeners.

There are still very few stations now. Nearly every attempt to set up a non state funded specialist music station has failed.
The population is just too small but apart from digital stations we are poorly catered for.

I moved on from listening to radio in 1990's so I don't care.
When John Peel came off MW frequency that was the end for me - apart from the odd bit o' sport

They used to switch off at midnight

You could go to bed and leave the radio on til it work you in the morning
It was fantastic

It seemed like when Phantom went legit they tried too hard (or were forced by investors) to become "properly" commercial. They had a real community at the time and IMO a supporter-based funding model (like patreon or Wikipedia) would have worked way better than the standard ad-funded model they went with. Pity - now I think the window of opportunity for that kind of thing has been closed by the streaming services
