Also - isn't carrying a weapon a crime? Why weren't the people who brought knives and hammers carted off to cabra garda station immediately?

MCD don't give a fuck.

The gards don't give a fuck.

Combine those two and you have a pretty powerful not-give-a-fuck.

I'm sending a copy of this to the Irish Times.

And the classic

"What is happening to our young people? They disrespect their elders, they disobey their parents. They ignore the law. They riot in the streets inflamed with wild notions. Their morals are decaying. What is to become of them?"
Plato, 4th Century BC

I wasn't suggesting cheap booze is the root of all the problems we have with the stuff but it certainly does contribute.
A lot of Irish people seem to be unaware that it is possible to enjoy a couple of drinks and leave it at that, instead the attitude seems to be to get as drunk as possible as quickly as possible, that's obviously a societal issue that we need to work on,bans on cost/below price alcohol won't solve the problem overnight but it would be a small step in the right direction.

Re: The price of booze. I heard a bit of Liveline earlier where the host, Notjoe, was saying that if someone had about 20 quid in their pocket for booze their options could be go into a pub and have 4 or so pints, or they could go to a supermarket and get 20 cans, and asked which is less potentially damaging for society. He said going to the pub where your drinking is curbed by the expense. I'd suggest that maybe it'd be society damaging neutral if the punter went to the supermarket, bought 4 cans to drink at home and then used the money they saved to buy other shit that they might also like.

Boozing is fun. Drugs are fun. Any amount of "education" horseshit isn't going to change that. Can we stop beating ourselves up over the fact that we like to get of our heads? You don't have to hate yourself to enjoy being drunk. Wouldn't it be simplest just to be a bit more practical about minimising the negative consequences?

"Have fun, but don't be a fucking moron?"

Also from Plato ...

" ... A new kind of song; and this ought not to be praised, .. For any musical innovation is full of danger to the whole State, and ought to be prohibited"

There's your solution right there.

Kind of a prick, wasn't he?

In fairness, we're doing really well to prevent ourselves from killing and raping every day of our lives, compared with our prehistoric ancestors. The odd blip like this is to be expected.
Maybe if the music wasn't so loud that you could hear it several miles away those kids wouldn't have come to the park with their hammers.
