Normal People (5 Viewers)

I finished watching the whole thing already. I really enjoyed it but I'd didn't see it as a class divide (per se) or a will they won't they only scenario. It seemed more how subtle miscommunication can alter the course of things. How self worth can hinder how you behave and see the world, from a young age into adulthood. Wealth and romance seemed to be tangental to me. Just my opinion. I'd be curious to read the book now though.

This thread is missing the context that in all the original reviews of the book, and her previous one, class was barely if at all mentioned and it was only in interviews with Sally Rooney herself that it started coming up. There's probably an overcorrection going on right now where everyone is mentioning it.

She was originally being sold/promoted as the authentic voice of her generation and there was a big deal made about her first book using Gchat and the like as a standard method of communication between her characters. Once all the celebs and models came on board and starting posting themselves reading the book the hype really ratcheted up a gear.

and now we have the tv show.

MARXISM.

But yeah re-living it through twitter and now it has to be *nuanced* by everyone. I'm never reading the book, is it romeo and juliet millenial edition?
You should, They're both good books, you could read them in a day each. I think I preferred the first one tbh but christ, they're not the only good books out there. This is entering Harry Potter and John Green levels of nonsense.

I'm not sure I can.

I've two I'm trying to get through, but more importantly I bough this for my sibling, and I've already knocked an evenings entertainment out of telling them I bought it for them to read so I wouldn't have to bother reading it, knowing they'd lap it up in an evening. I'd either have to ask them for it or buy it again.

I tuned into a bit of the TV show last night and the class thing was glaringly obvious i.e. all about Connell finding it hard to fit in with the uber-privileged TCD students. A random sample of it I know .....

He came from the countryside and didn’t truly fit in there either. Again, rich kids and trinity seems like a small part of an overall feeling of isolation and lack of confidence to be himself despite the setting. I don’t want to say too much as people are still watching. I do feel what I’ve read about it now (not much) is over simplifying what is probably a very poignant book in many ways going by the TV version. I assume the adapted script is skimming a bit but still very good in imho.

I’m going to need to read the book to see if I’m correct about some of assumptions.

The discourse... I just can't anymore... It's completely ruined Irish porno Dawson's Creek for me...
PULL YOURSELF TOGETHER MAN

If we didn't have the discourse how the fuck would we get through every hell day of our go-nowhere-die-alone-and-unloved day jobs??

Do not blame the discourse for your own life decisions.
