Fight For Women's Right to Choose! (1 Viewer)

A better question would be what are they hoping to achive? I'd have thought with the law as it stands is not a problem to get an abortion and unless you're looking to legalise here there is not much to campaign for.

Great rally? What is it that you think you achieved?

It was great in that the logistics went well, we raised some funds, pro-choice people came out to hear what we had to say, it got a bit of media attention, raised the issue of abortion and its illegality in public once more.

You answered your own question! We are looking to legalise abortion here. In my original post of this thread, you can find out more about what Choice Ireland hopes to achieve.

Ah right fair enough.

You might want to spend some of the funds on a miniature American flag to placate Janer.

I wondered if the heckler was you Janer! Thanks for coming along regardless, but I have to say that that was the worst heckle I've ever seen,
I was bejesus the only pro life demo person there...think I done fairly ok tbh....
Anyway I am prepared for a truce as long as there is no shyte from ur side on these boards ;)

to a legal position that everyone is sort of happy with

MN, are you joking? If you're not, no offence but what on earth are you talking about?

Inanyways buh, lil' point- Ireland tends to take a while to come round to things. It took quite a while to get contraception legalised (1979), suicide decriminalised (early 90's) and divorce legalised (mid 90s). A plethora of other controversial legislation founded on catholic morality to do with families/drugs/sex etc has been reformed in the last 20 years on issues that seemed like they were set in stone. I have absolute faith that through the work of pro-choice organisations (and all of those who support women, their rights, equality, human rights and all the other awesome things that anti-abortion legislation refutes) the legislation will be changed in the not-too distant future.

*Je m'appelle pollyanna wimp-face ttm.

I dunno Buzzo, the whole abortion thing doesn't strike me as a topic you can talk most folk around on. It seems to me that if you think abortion is killing babies then you're never going to be convinced that it's an OK thing.

Has there been any polling done on the issue in recent years just to see what the view of the nation as a whole is?

By the way, if this is an actual fight then I'm perfectly happy to get in a ring with Justin Barrett. I hate that disgusting little gnome.

Dude you may not be wrong in terms of a pro-babies mindset..... minds may not be changed. I'm gonna throw this shit out here.... but I'd say people said the same thing about divorce and contraception in the not too distant past (family is family, extra marital sex is extra marital sex etc).... they were all sanctified to a point. I don't know if any recent opinion polls have been done on this. I'm not to big on it.

I don't believe that any society moving forwards- away from the destructive political force that is the omnipotence of catholic morality (I aint raggin on the church as a whole, they've done some awesome shit)- can maintain the draconian laws we have in place relating to female bodily integrity. In fact, I'd hope to see the legislation challenged in the ECHR at some point and get knocked about. Again, I aint no legal hot shot so I'm not sure what such a process would entail or whether there'd be any kind of positive outcome for the pro-choice cause if it did happen... Ramble ramble..... autonomy of individual states in certain areas.... bleh bleh. zzz.

Failing this, I'm moving under the sea (no accusations, friendly crustaceans)

I guess you could be right but at the same time I'd imagine that there's a lot of people that can see that jipping into a condom is a minor thing but still reckon life is life and that's that. It's one of the big 10.

I can see it happening but not anytime soon, I would imagine that younger generations tend to be more pro-choice and the most likely way for it to be legalised is to wait for older, more pro-life people to die out. But that's decades away.

Out of interest for the people who aren't Janer. At what point, if ever, during pregnancy does it become unacceptable for a woman to have an abortion? If a foetus is at a point where if it were born prematurely it'd be viable and have a chance to survive I don't imagine most people would think that aborting it could be right. At the same time I don't imagine that it's something that comes up very often because if a woman were to abort she'd have done it earlier so maybe it's a dumb question.
