Dj's, I just don't get it (4 Viewers)

the best dj in the world i believe is dj /rupture. i have seen him a few times, always stunning. he played a 2 1/2 hour set in the music centre a couple of years ago which was fucking amazing. his mix cds - gold teeth thief, minsweeper suite, the bidoun sessions - are absolutely incredible, the best shit. the diversity and power... mmmmm.

I like /rupture--I was at that TBMC gig as well, and have the mix CDs you mention--but I think he's highly overrated. His juxtapositions seem more designed to show off his technical prowess than his record collection, which annoys me a great deal. In my opinion, a good DJ is 90% tune selection and sequencing and 10% technical ability, and ones that favour the latter over the former annoy me greatly.

I think /rupture kind of does that. Yeah, he can chop, cut and slice with the best of 'em, but anyone who drops an utterly irredeemable track like Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly" into a set is automatically suspect in my book. Throwing in a mad, fucked-up sample just to show that you can counts for very little.

I think he showed this failing rather obviously on his Special Gunpowder album of last year, which I think is pretty awful. The production, as you'd expect, is fine, but the songs ain't any damn good. I never thought I'd ever say that he was boring, but after listening to that album, I've come to really question his musical judgement.

And people keep calling him "diverse". Well, he may play stuff that other DJs don't, but if that's all he plays, then he's just as narrow-minded as any other DJs out there. Nothing he's ever done DJ-wise has approached someone like Coldcut at their best. Play Minesweeper Suite and 70 Minutes of Madness (still the best DJ mix CD I've ever heard) back-to-back and judge for yourself.

As I said, I like most of his stuff, and would gladly go see him DJ again. I just personally wouldn't rate him particularly highly in my own personal DJ pantheon.

Goddamn
So, you think that electronic musicians make all their music with drugs in mind?
F**k sake! I thought people were a little better musically educated now.

How did I leave out Coldcut? That Journeys by DJ cd is AMAZING. Bizarrely there's another Roberta Flack song on it 'The First Time Ever I saw your Face' but it's sung by someone else and pees all over Flack's version.

Anyone at that Coldcut gig in Meeting House Square? Twas great.

Blech is a great mix cd too, better than JOurneys by DJ in my opinion

true, he was good. but nowhere near Mike Relm who was DJing in Roskilde as a part of an evening of music from Quannum. If i remember correctly he even dropped bits of Pixies into the set, keeping it hip hop and hopping everywhere. Mad skillz but great tunes .|..|
