Ads are wrecking my head (2 Viewers)

hmm-my PC got a virus during the week- it attacked and deleted the kernel.dll which meant windows couldn't boot up

is this the same thing?

- I was in the middle of a job and needed it fixed immediately so I called the Dell helpline

Pete- you owe me 140 quid

Or it could've been down to the Russian porn sites I frequent i suppose

Modern viruses & trojans don't really go in for deleting system files. These days it's all about money and silently taking control of as many compromised PCs as possible for fun and profit, which is why i'm advising everyone to do some serious antivirus scanning.

It's also worth pointing out that a fully patched & up to date system is far far less likely to be vulnerable to this kind of thing. It's happened on much bigger sites than thumped.com (liveleak & aintitcool off the top of my head) so it's absolutely critical to keep up with those system patches, application updates & antivirus definitions.

Pete,
I work on an Oireachtas computer so i'm hoping our AV is robust as fuck. Anyway, we use Trend Micro Office Scan and it has found the following (user name removed by me):

PAK_Generic.001 from D:\Profiles\[user]\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\AX4QMJ0K\svchost[1].exe

Is that related to this ad problem?

Gonna do a full scan anyway, thanks for the heads up.

My Avast caught this a few times yesterday morning and today. Also using Firefox. I thought it came from another site I was watching the Tour De France on.

Yeah AVG picked this up for me yesterday too. I noticed it was doing some funny things like attempting to run acrobat reader and launching java.

I use ad block and have never encountered any thing untoward on here....I'll run scans now anyway(although my machines do it every night at 3 am)

My question is..is it still possible to have contracted something if the ads never loaded in the first place?

I think that would depend on how adblock is configured. I don't use it myself so can't really help. Run the full scans anyway.

Yeah,I think if yer a subscriber with the ads turned off yer grand.....both of my machines seem clean..I used AVG and Malwarebytes and have everything bang up to date....
