I was bored of Gears 30 minutes into the first one.

yeah i wasnt a massive fan of the first game. but i didnt get into the multiplayer at all. but still there are a ton of games it can be traded for if i dont like it

It's a by-numbers repetitive shooter, the dialogue is risible and the art is technically great but utterly boring. Or am I missing the point?

I don't think you're missing the point at all, but it's no more repetitive than any other running around shooting / blowing crap up game. Yeah the dialogue is pretty crummy, but who cares? It moves the "plot" along, and that's the main thing. It's most definitely technically great - this one looks much better than the last one, to my eyes at least. I don't find it boring at all - it's too much fun.
