Right, had a decent 2 hours or so of Assassin's Creed yesterday. They better get their optimise on, because there are still some serious framerate dips and texture pop-in issues that might mean they've been a bit over-ambitious with the engine. Beyond the technical stuff, the game's looking like it'll be fun. The skulking around pretending to be a monk stuff is handled well, but unlike most stealth games it's not a complete pain in the hole if you get rumbled for knifing a randomer in the main square or something. The non-stealthy swordfights are fluid - mostly a matter of defence and timing one-button counter moves - and pretty satisfying when you're skewering a bunch of guards. If you're being particularly badass, the enemy morale system kicks in and the remaining guards will scarper. At which point, if you're any kind of man, you'll chase them down and perforate their spines.

Otherwise, if you don't fancy standing your ground, you can do some free-running around the rooftops, which takes a bit of getting used to (much of the controls in the game are based around holding buttons down rather than constant button presses) and handles well, even if it does end up feeling more like constant leaps of faith rather than precision platforming. The geography of the streets is set up as a parkour playground, with "safe-houses" dotted around the map where you can restore your anonymity if you're outside of the guards' line of sight. NPC crowds act as obstacles and traps.

There's also some sci-fi bullshit floating around various bits of the game (monitor glitches, Matrix-style typography) which Ubisoft wouldn't answer any questions about. My feeling is that they could have left it as a game with an ancient holy land setting and everyone would have been just fine with that, but maybe they'll pull off some interesting plot shenanigans. Voice acting was tolerable, but the crowd dialog sounds canned and seems to repeat a lot.

Yeah there's meant to be some kind of DNA/time travel thing going on, one of the actors accidentally spilt those beans months ago. Though Ubisoft have always denied it.

Sounds like it might be delayed then?
