Whiskey / Whisky appreciation thread (1 Viewer)

Just had a brilliant long conversation with an old guy that's a whiskey specialist at a fine wine store.

I'm trying to trace a particular brand of rye. It's essentially impossible, but why it's impossible took about 10 minutes to tell me.

Dude is awesome. Trying to figure out an excuse to get him to go drinking with me.

Post xmas whisky haul isn't too bad:
- Dailuaine 16yo: Rich but not overpowering. Lots going on and a really long finish. Fruity and a little bit smokey.
- Springbank 10yo: Had the cask strength 12yo last year and loved it, but it was almost too much. This has just the right amount of smokeyness and it lingers, but not for too long.

I need to get a bottle of Black Bush so I don't dog the good stuff too quickly.

Had a wee dram of this stuff the other day. Really nice, very smooth.

Has anyone been to the Scotch Malt Whisky Society in Edinburgh? Amazing place with an incredible selection of cask strength whisky's. None of them are branded- they all have a four digit code with a set of really elaborate and extravagant tasting notes. My sister is a member and picked me up one of these for christmas:

G7.3 Fresh toffee and glossy magazines
Cask No. G7.3

The nose began with popcorn and a round of buttered toast with heather honey and apricot jam. Also freshly printed glossy magazines, chocolate, Werther’s Originals toffees and crème caramel. It was still sweet but surprisingly fiery and hot to taste with pencil shavings, cardboard and brown manila envelopes. Water made the nose richer and creamier and prompted references to a toffee shop, cardboard boxes of old books, leather and pineapple cubes. It also brought out a tannic, slightly bitter taste together with spicy, woody notes, dried flowers (lavender and roses) and a white pepper warmth. This Ayrshire distillery began production in 1964.

Drinking tip: Go easy with the water

Date Distilled: 28 May1984 Colour: Honey bronze Age: 27 years Cask Type: Refill ex bourbon hogshead Whisky Region: Girvan

27 years old and 60%. Seriously intense but with about 3 drops of water becomes an amazing whisky.

If you ever get a chance to visit the place don't miss out on it...
