What movie did you watch last night? (25 Viewers)

The Surfer

Nick Cage goes on a psychodelic surf trip. This film is class, bizarre in a good way and class. The direction is excellent, and Cage is on top form. Only complaint I have is that I reckon you could cut maybe 10 minutes out of it and not do any harm.

Mission Impossible

It's alright, overlong and the worst thing about it is that it's basically just a rehash of Fallout, which is by far the best Mission Impossible film and this one doesn't come close because it doesn't have the same great 'bad' guys as Fallout.
Of course there is very little of it that actually makes any sense, in fact there's an awful lot of Fast And Furious about it, but hey the action is pretty good as expected and there's one sequence in it that I thought was pretty cool (and nonsensical, naturally).
Overall mark - decent action watch, nothing particularly noteworthy aside from that.

Chosen survivors (1974)
A random group of strangers are told that a nuclear war has started & they have been chosen to live in a high tech underground facility where they have to deal with claustrophobia, isolation, &.... vampire bats. And to top it off, they may not have been told the truth. It's not bad. It's a bit slow moving, but the set design is cool & the effects, while of their time, add a psychedelic touch to it. The ending is quite bleak. I would be disappointed if it wasn't. Full film up on YouTube.

The Damned
Very odd movie. And features the stupidest rock and roll song I've ever heard.
Adults getting the youth wrong.
It plays over the opening scene.the gang whistle it as they stomp through the streets. The girl sings it absently to herself. The gang whistle it again, this time as a covert call to each other as the prowl about in the dark. I really think the makers thought they had a youth anthem on their hands.

Sinners

Every bit as good as I'd heard it was.
Watched it again tonight. So good.

About halfway through I realised where I recognised Bert from:

Rewatched Ghost Ship. I forgot how bad it is. There's a kernel of a good ghost story yarn but its just not good. And the music is awful.

In a similar vein, we watched a chunk of that one about the Demeter (the ship Dracula arrives to England on in the book) and it was pretty awful. Liam Cunningham was good in it but he’d have to do a lot of heavy lifting to make us finish it.

Yeah. I only rewatched this recently, having forgotten I'd already seen it. It's not good. I saw some people comparing it to Alien or Predator, but it's nowhere near that calibre. It's not terrible, but it should be so much better. I gave up halfway through my second watch.

I don’t often think I could do better when watching a movie but… I could have done better.

Ballerina

Latest John Wick franchise thing. This is basically an excuse to give a director two hours to do whatever action he wants on screen. For that reason, a lot of it looks pretty cool, some of the action shots are great, in particular there's one scene where the music goes really well with it too (sounds like Perturbator kind of stuff) but the plot is basically non-existent, as with the other John Wick sequels.
It's pretty boring by the end, I think you've seen all the cool action shit in the first hour and a half or so but by the end it's all just more of the same. The most disappointing aspect of it all is that the first say 15 minutes or so gives the film ample scope to maybe do something interesting with the plot/story in this fantasy assassin world, but all that opportunity is thrown out the window in favour of action action action; literally as you get into the second hour of the film, they just have one goal with the 'plot' and that's it.
The whole thing does look nice though, the John Wick world does have a great neon/washed out/wet look that allows for some really great shots, and the bits of the film in locations like Prague really make those places look extra gothic and awesome.
Conclusion - the director has done a good job with this film in terms of camera and action, but there's nothing really interesting here except for some cool shots and action ideas every now and then. In fairness, that's surely what a lot of people who go to see it are there for - that side of it works okay for me! Just there's nothing else to grab a hold of here.

The one with Oliver Reed in it. I have a recorded off the TV VHS of it.
(It was probably from the last time it was shown on the BBC, 19-02-2011 BBC Two - The Damned )
Starts off as a "teenage" delinquent film & turns into a military experiment sci-fi film.
Some Hammer fans think highly of it.....I dunno. Must give it a fresh watch.

Watched ten minutes of Gladiator II. Terrible, had to turn it off. I'm all for swords and sandals Hollywood stuff, but this was bad.

Is it worth continuing with?

Night train murders (1975)
Italian thriller with English dubbing. Two beautiful young women travelling overnight on a train are attacked & terrorized by some sleazy criminals. It takes a while to get going, but it looks good. Its quite nasty & graphic in places (some of it is blurred on this upload) Full film up on YouTube with really good picture quality...apart from the blurred bits.
