What movie did you watch last night? (23 Viewers)

this. meditative and slow, but also a bit *too* meditative and slow — or at least relying too much on it as an film-making strategy, let’s say. sakamoto seems like he was a lovely guy. nice archival footage.
When I was in Japan, I stuck the tele in the hotel on one night and they were showing one of his final performances, and it was class

I watched Mulholland Drive for the first time

Don't really know what to make of it. Naomi Watts' acting was amazing, but I was kinda bored a lot of the time, and if the two leads hadn't been so jaw-droppingly gorgeous I dunno if I'd have bothered finishing it
I think I’ve seen it 6 or 7 times now and it’s better every time.

A Working Man

Stat by the numbers, i.e a decent action film with the Stat battering people every now and then. It's essentially Stat crossing Taken and John Wick without being as good as either.

This is actually a bit of a weird one though, because overall this film is a fairly total mess, BUT there's certain bits in the film that are fuckin brilliant. It's like whoever directed some of the action scenes really knew their shit. Essentially, loads of this film is bog standard, cliched (Russian gangsters) and just fairly ridiculous, but that's all interspersed with a few full on action scenes that are really well announced and directed, even if they are also ridiculous, and at least 2 of those action scenes are proper quality shit.

So basically this film is fairly shit for anyone that isn't an action/Stat fan, but for an action/Stat fan it's fairly worthwhile and has loads of FUCK YEAH moments particularly towards the end - and not all of these moments belong to Stat either! At least one of the FUCK YEAH moments belongs to one of the Russian gangsters!

Talk radio (1988)
A controversial, late night, shock jock, radio host starts to become affected by the abrasive anger of his own show. I saw this years ago but couldn't really remember much about it. Directed by Oliver Stone, it starts off great. Hits a bit of a lull 40 minutes in with an overly long flash back scene...but it picks up after that. Good film. It's at its best when he is interacting with the crazy bastards that call into the radio show. Up on YouTube. Picture quality, pretty good.

Pictures of the Old World
"An elegiac journey through Slovakia's Carpathian Mountain villages, with interviews of old peasants about the happiness and hardships in their lives." This is great.

Rose Tinted Dreams
"Jakub, a dreamer and budding magician, juggles between parcels and services rendered to the villagers. His eyes cross that of the beautiful gypsy Jolanka. Together, they will try to live a first and big love, despite the pressure of their respective communities." Same director as above, pretty good.

I Even Met Happy Gypsies
"The protagonist, Bora, is a charming but mean-spirited gypsy, while his older wife, Lence, is submissive. Bora is in love with the younger Tisa, who is being offered in marriage by her father. The two get themselves in trouble and eventually have to flee. Tisa rejects her husband and she and Bora get married in the church, and their adventures continue." Good, I liked it

Days of Heaven
"A hot-tempered farm laborer convinces the woman he loves to marry their rich but dying boss so that they can have a claim to his fortune." Excellent

Prey (1977)
Low budget British sci fi horror directed by Norman J Warren.
A young woman lives with her girlfriend in a large house in the English countryside inherited from her parents. They take in a strange young man they find in the grounds, but unbeknownst to them his body has been taken over by an alien entity. It's pretty good. Has a very limited cast, 3 people for most of the film & the shooting locations are either in the house or in the woods. On the plus side It does have a strange unsettling atmosphere to it. The acting is good & there's a bit of lesbianism... because it's the 70's.

Sinners

This is a fuckin amazin B-movie. Delroy Lindo has the absolute fuckin craic in it. Soundtrack is top notch.
Few walkouts there, probably from people that thought it was going to be serious and real in some way, or some shit. It wasn't, it's a fuckin laugh. Good shit!

fat city (1972) - john huston film with a boxing theme starring stacy keach and featuring a young jeff bridges. pretty decent

Terror (1978)
Another Norman Warren film.
A group of friends who's ancestors were cursed by a witch, experiment with hypnosis & unleash vengeful evil spirits. It starts off well, but the plot gets a bit unfocused & it turns into a routine slasher. It does have some cool scenes & the acting is mostly good. The over use of stock thunder & lighting sound effects doesn't do it any favours. It does feature a young gorgeous Glynis Barber, but unfortunately she meets her maker 25 minutes in.

Renfield is on now. Funny script, but, that's the best of it. Awful fight scenes, cgi blood and gore, mediocre montage. Meh at a very generous best

The Accountant 2

Mixed bag, some good some bad.
The story is actually pretty good, there's decent action scenes, one real good shoot up, Jon Bernthal is class.
The bad, whereas I definitely wanted a more 'Equalizer' style approach, with The Accountant just being one bad-ass you don't want to cross, instead they kind of took this X-Man approach basically, you'll see what I mean if you watch it.
Essentially, it's a very different film to the first, there's a slightly lighter tone with a lot of bullshit attempts at 'humour' that are not what I want in this film but I guess they want to flesh the characters out a little bit or whatever (that stuff does work for Bernthal though).
It would have been much better sticking to the darker tone for me. Like I say, gimme more Equaliser type shit.
