gonna have to face some big scary needles pretty soon. never needed to get vaccinated or whatever before, so I don't have a clue. can you stroll into any doctor in the country to get these or what? I assume that it's probably not very cheap. I hate needles.

thanks!

Well, I believe that the Grafton Medical Centre have a dedicated Vaccination Centre.

Personally I've never had any vaccinations for travel. Prefer to take my chances... but that's just me.

Yeah the Grafton Medical Centre know their shit. They also keep records of your jabs so next time you are going somewhere they know exactly what you need and dont need.

As far as I know, any doctor can do it .... but I reckon most of them will point you to one of the specialists ....

But no, they're not cheap unfortunately. But then many of them last for five or ten years. And they're only tiny little needles.

Get the jabs! Tropical diseases aren't funny! Some countries wont let you in without the proper vaccination certificates anyway ...

yeah, I was reading about rabies earlier. yeesh!

I plan to venture into jungles and shit so I think it might be wise to get some shots. the last time I got an injection there was a nurse there who distracted me with a picture book about some puppy. do they still do that?

any side effects to any of this shit? or is that question just nonsense? :)

You going somewhere malarial? If so, there can be side-effects to malaria tablets. But then, one of the possible side-effects of malaria is death, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

You could always get someone to go along and hold your hand ;)

very true. I remember reading somewhere that one malaria medication can result in side effects like paranoia and nightmares. pretty alarming. but I'm sure there are alternatives. heading to c. america, so some malarial protection will be necessary I guess... reading up on tropical diseases would give anybody the fear. you wouldn't want to be easily discouraged!

also true! :D

Nearly any doctor gives these - i just walked in and hey presto!Well, it was'nt that easy..i had to walk back out again as i was short about 60 quid...came back and gave those money grabbers the greens and...hey presto!Expensive carry on.
Wacky dreams for a few weeks, feeling a bit 'out there' at times.Thats about it really.
Never been to where your going though.

Prepare to feel shit after getting shots-the rabies shot is the worst by far-all fluey and tired! For Malaria, get Malarone-no side effects other than some weird dreams-they're pricey but you can get them on the Drug Refund Scheme!

hmmm.... I feel pretty shit most of the time anyway, so it should be no problem. unless it kills me that is! I can live with trippiness and fucked up dreams; it's possible I might even enjoy it! :D thanks guys good advice all round.

what is zis "drug refund scheme"?

Its if you spend over 80 euro a month on medicines...any chemist should have the forms/info leaflets - you have to send away for a card - i still have'nt gotten around to it.

ah! sounds intriguing... do you have to regularly spend over €80 a month, or just the once?
basically, if you spend over €80 a month on perscription drugs the government will pay the balance. First time you apply for it you have to pay the full whack then fill out forms with recipts and hey presto you get a cheque in the post along with a drug refund card, I only availed of it the once but you have the card for life

so anyway... got the shots. pretty painless really. you're right hugh, the needles were pretty small. :) they ended up being kinda cheap as well; I called the cork vaccination centre (across the road from my office) and they were quoting some outlandish shit, plus "consultation fees", so I headed up to my old GP outside limerick... €140 for hep a, typhoid, tetanus, diptheria, yellow fever and my malaria prescription. that included the visit too. sweet. I decided to enschew the rabies. any dog/cat/bat/monkey that looks funny at me gets a rock in the face! well, either that or I run away really quickly. I might get it over there. the doctor didn't seem to think it was absolutely vital...

now to sort out travel insurance. fuck's sake, more money!

My friend had to put a rabid dog down that was going mad on the street. He had to grab it and break it's neck with his bare hands!!!! He didn't get bitten though.

Also, a lot of people say that vaccinations last five to ten years, but my nephew got a load of them when he was working abroad somewhere but he had to get them done again less than a year later as he got some tests done in work and they'd all worn off!

that's insane. imagine if you had to do that with a raboid human. it'd be like a zombie movie or something. brave guy. where was that? not dublin I assume..

clonan attack: yeah. spent a few months away; mostly in mexico, guatemala and nicaragua. oh, and beize for a couple of days. strange place. fuck, this was almost a year ago. amazing part of the world. will definitely be going back. I could easily see myself living in latin america. I want to go on holidays now!
