Correct me if i'm way off here, but do 45% of the country not just vote for their party always? You could run for either party tomorrow and be guaranteed about that much support.

Yeah. Pretty much true. But, I think that just restates the statement that forty something percent of Americans are racist, hard-right authoritarians.
This is the beautiful thing that Trump has done. Previously you could be a secret, hard right authoritarian, and vote for happy chappies like Ronald Reagan, and integrate yourself back into everyone else's lives as normal.
What Trump has done is removed this fluffy exterior from GOP voters. It's now clear what they want and think. Nobody is forcing them to vote for this guy, or this party.
The party is what it is, their leader is who is he, it couldn't be clearer now, and they chose to vote for that.
