Ok, bit of a rant: Aside from when I’m passing through a couple of small towns, the speed limit on the road I drive to work is currently 80kph the first half and 100kph the second half. I’m lucky enough to be driving against the rest of the Dublin commuting traffic - 30km of my route has no traffic lights, so there’s a fairly constant stream of oncoming traffic and a completely open road ahead. These are decent roads, not those shitty little country backroads that someone’s stuck an 80kph sign on that make you wonder if they’ve ever actually seen them.

We all accept that these are limits not targets, but almost every other day I get stuck behind someone driving 50 in the 80 or 65 in the 100 and it’s the most infuriating shit ever because while these are decent roads, there are no overtaking lanes and almost every single time there’s some other clown sitting on their bumper making it impossible for anyone else to overtake.

Maybe these people have nowhere to be and all the time in the world to get there, but those few minutes can be the difference between getting to work ahead of the school run traffic jam or getting home before the local business parks are emptying out, both of which can seriously mess up traffic. Those extra couple of minutes spent stuck behind someone can very quickly multiply.

It’s not even the x minutes vs y minutes that gets me, it’s the very specific pointlessness of it all. It’s such an unnecessary waste of time and I’m really not looking forward to finding out just how slowly these people can drive miss daisy if the limit gets lowered.

unreasonably slow drivers grinds my fucking gears aswell.
' oh a bit of rain? better slow down to 50 in this 80 road'
fucking jokers

I just drove from Donegal town to Sligo behind a (yes really) Porsche 911 turbo that only did 70kph.

The ETA on my satnav didn't move one minute the whole time. (It's largely n17 100kph).

So going 30% slower/ faster is having no effect on time of arrivals.

I'm really starting to think that that 70-80kmh area is actually just the average speed all over and anything faster is an illusions that junctions and towns Iron out.

Like if I cut 2-3 mins off that drive, the traffic light sequence in Sligo is going to reset that totally, as is Grange/Drumcliff.

More as it happens.

part 2 - sligo to galway (138km)

Sat nav referencing and i ran the obd2 thing aswell.

There was no point i was above 85 - that was just the flow this evening with trucks and whatnot - a lot of the time it was more like 75ish and if i had the road to myself i didn't go over 80.

Most of that road is 100 zone.

got in 2 mins later than gmaps estimated and on the obd reader fuel consumption was down by about 6% on the regular average. There was a truck junctioning in a town which probably took up that most of that 2 mins. Bar motorways i'm not sure i can see a point in going over 80 now that i've looked at it a bit.

van failed its cvrt spectacularly. pain in the gee

it didnt fail on emission's though ..so its getting fixed up. its a great little van. would love to get a decade out of it. it only cost me 1800 and its into its third year with me now. its basically free driving

I am however a bit preoccupied with they thought of buying a BRAND NEW yoke. No one in my family has ever bought a brand new vehicle. I am real gentle with my vehicles..i keep them serviced and drive like an auld wan..a BRAND NEW one this year would surely see me out the rest of my life.

would have to be financed though....5 years of monthly payments. .and a warranty mind you... that would be nice

versus .. drive my banger into the ground and just replace with same when it shits the bed.. and have no extra bills. thats my usual MO. and it has served me well.

its a tough decision . Imagine driving a brand new Volkswagen caddy though...like..thats surely the dream.
i think i might be talking myself into it here

HP though..ugh

Burning a few grand for a number plate. No financial advice ever says buy a new car.
Well...thats a good point ...and realistically Id be looking at brand new second hand.. if ya know what I mean

still under warranty.. less than 5 k on it

i dont need to be driving it out of the showroom..

and you know its not about the number plate ..its about knowing...that all wear and tear thats done ..Ive done it ..Id say I could get 50 years out of a new van

like ..all the used ones.. mostly arent operator owned . theyve had various young lads rallying them or other lads who hate their jobs just banging them about the gaf.

you should see what our postman does to the yoke he drives.. straight up massive kerbs without even slowing down..you can hear the chassis hitting the floor. brand new van. its criminal

I wonder do go-cars sell their fleet off at some stage. Those vans are never doing the work of a regular van and it's mostly gonna be weekend people grabbing furniture and stuff

I drove on the M50 for the first time today. What a shitshow.

I didn't see anyone do anything that nearly killed someone, but the amount of people pootling along way under the speed limit in the middle and outside lanes was ridiculous, especially when the left lane was practically empty half the time.

Irish people don't know how to use motorway lanes properly

Oh my sweet summer child.... I was up dropping off empty paint cans..of which I had many..in the only paint recycling facility in Dublin.. anyway..there was two lads emptying a go van of broken up concrete just beside me. Those yokes are not treated well.

In other news I bought a Peugeot Partner today..4 gs... 2013 ..with a mere hundo on the clock...in IMMACULATE condition..it looks brand new..and best of all..its black! Thing goes like a rocket ..100bhp,I bought it off a gard who only used it for light nixering. Its class.

After driving it round all day though I'm pretty sure theres only about a month left in the clutch. But I dont care it looks like the a-team van. I'd say yer man was driving it like burt reynolds

Its also long enough to lie down in ..which is a major plus..Im bringing herself up to Ballycroy for some stargazing as soon as its warm enough
