The Russian invasion of Ukraine (15 Viewers)

not even two minutes in and we have our nazi insignia

the russians may be extremely cynical in how they’re instrumentalising the claim of fascism in ukraine... but they’re not wrong about the reality of fascism in ukraine

like it’s so much a feature of ukrainian politics that it was previously used as a punchline by zelensky himself back when he was a comedian

edit: here’s the video, of course it’s posted by some account that’s spitting venom against zelensky but the footage is real, from 2010

HHmm what was that thing the Nazis used to love to do ? Oh yes invade a neighbouring country.
Yeah why not I guess that makes Russia's behaviour towards Ukraine just like the Nazis then.

Oligarch who likes to incarcerate his politic opposition or throw them from mutli storey buildings onto concrete, or have their planes tampered with Vladimir Putin is taking lads from labor camps in north Korea to go to their deaths in Ukraine that he also invaded.

How seriously would you take the exisitence of pockets of Neo Nazi's across Europe - like is it logical that Putin should seize all areas that include them.

Like i've been aware of the nazi sublplot because the russian media machine based the whole early campaign around it media wise, i'm just curious as to what relevance it has at this point in time?

think of it similarly to loyalist paramilitaries in the north in the 70s, or osama bin laden and his pals in afghanistan in the 80s. tiny amount of people, huge amount of chaos. perfect wedge to use for cracking other things open. these fascist formations are the ones most willing to do lunatic stuff, the relevance that they have is that they *will* be central to whatever the outcome is there, because they have spent decades getting prepared for it. they are a small but critical catalyst to everything else.

and people there *know this* — that’s how zelensky was able to use it as a punchline! it’s just common knowledge for ukrainians that these groups are one of the critical centers of power in the country. there are other centers as well — sbu, klitschko, budanov, yermak, various oligarchs — but you basically cannot have a coherent understanding of what is happening there without reckoning with this.

also this all presumes that we are talking about the actual war that is happening, which is a war between russia and nato, which just happens to be occurring in ukraine (but could have happened instead in finland or ossetia or belarus or kazakhstan if the dice had landed differently at various points)

Long gave up following Ukraine situation - even before full invasion.
There's two things here that are almost separate:
NATO v Russia would be at war anyway without Putin. NATO never wanted to work Gorbachev, Yeltsin or Putin pre Georgia invasion.

2) Putin is a absolute bollocks. True, but that is mostly a problem for Russians.
I watched Russia Today for years and they were good at times at calling out US, NATO, EU hypocrisy. But when it came to Russia, particularly Putin, it was like 1984.
RT wouldn't dare criticise Putin.
They went from saying Erdogan was the anti Christ who supports ISIL to saying Erdogan's great in two weeks after he had a reconciliation meeting with Putin.

EDIT: of course the Western media have lots of dishonest agendas they are just less blatant about it.
