I love the fall but I thought they were awful when they played crawdaddy last year.

i heard that, but once again, the galway show was great. they sent me over a recording of it. The Fall : Half Cocked In Galway.

switch!

it's a gay red, roundhead, army career, grim head
if we were smart we would emigrate

guess that's why they end up in bands

You think you've got it bad with thin ties,
miserable songs synthesized, or circles with A in the middle.
Make joke records, hang out with Gary Bushell,
Join round table. "I like your single, you're great!"
A circle of low IQ's.

I hear that gig was incredible alright. Saw them in leeds in 99, the day they kicked the bass player out of the van on the way to the gig, tour manager stood in on bass - bad idea! Smitha spent the whole time fucking with them. One of the best sets at that festival.

Here - whatever about fall albums, what about the ultimate fall mixtape?

Too much reliance on girl here
On girls here, behind every shell-actor
Snobbier snobbier
Too much romantic here
I destroy romantics, actors,
Kill it! Kill it!
Kill it-ah!
KILL IT!
KILL IT-AH!

The Fall have been my favourite band since I was around 14/15. The album that got me into them was This Nation's Saving Grace back in Christmas 1985. While the back catalogue looks daunting it's worthwhile noting that they have only released 24 studio albums. Live albums and compilations bring the total past 80.

Up till last year there wasn't a career spanning compilation - but this changed with the release of 50,000 Fall Fans Can't Be Wrong - a double CD of some 38 or 39 songs. If I were you I'd get that and see what you think. Most of it is pretty accessible.

Or you could go for the ultimate Fall compilation which is The Complete Peel Sessions, 24 sessions across 6 CDs. Released last month. Amazing.

If you like that then I would recommend getting the following studio albums

Hex Enduction Hour (1982 - album #5)
Grotesque (1980 - album #3)
Slates (1981 - album #4)
This Nation's Saving Grace (1985 - album #9)
The Real New Fall LP (2003 - album #24)

now what you have to watch out for is the particular version of each album.
Sanctuary are re-releasing the back catalogue in stages (deluxe expanded editions with bonus tracks, remastered sound etc). The stuff that has been released so far

Live At The Witch Trials
Dragnet (1979 both - albums #1 and #2)
Totale's Turns (1980 live album)
Grotesque
Live In London 1980
Slates
A Part Of America Therein 1981 (fantastic live album)
Hex Enduction Hour

due next month
Room To Live (1982 - album #6)
Perverted by Language (1983 - album #7)

Do not buy the above albums if you see previous CD editions of them - shoddy sound quality etc. Vinyl wise you'll pick them up second hand.

The band moved to Beggar's Banquet in 1984 and stayed there til 1989 and a reissue programme is being seriously discussed by the label.

They have that in Navan, I was thinking of getting it.
