That's what, 18 years of being compromised? There's no major difference, song/production/quality-wise between their first Geffen album and their last. I think Thurston is just getting a dig in at Geffen in that interview.

They always used their side-projects, the SYR label etc for the more experimental stuff, can't see them changing things too much.

Ah I dunno, I think that 5 album in 6 year run from Evol through to Dirty is peak period Sonic Youth gold and I'd have Daydream Nation and Evol topping the list with Sister at the bottom, Goo and Dirty were the first 2 Geffen records and would swap spots for 3 and 4.
