Scutter or any other bikers.... (1 Viewer)

Hi Hayworth,

thats a really cool bike. I'd say most bike shops could sort you out but Square Wheel Cycleworks sorta specialises in older bikes and the guy in there is super friendly and cheap. He's not the fastest but if yer charming he might do it for you on the spot.

If anything southside is major hassle there's a bike repair shop on Dorset Street - just by the Centra near North Frederick Street. I've never had anything done there but think the place is supposed to be ok.

i'd recommend mc cormack's cycles, 31A Lower Dorset St, ph 8366173. he's sorted me out with loads of advice and info. he's pretty good with old bikes too. i'm currently doing up an ancient work bike and got all the parts i needed to replace off him, including the rod-type brake pads.

alternatively check out the old bicycle company. they're based in the uk but you can order parts through their website:
http://www.theoldbicycleshowroom.co.uk/

on the lights front, i'd suggest spending a few quid on good LED lights. they're way better and last way longer than the cheap ones. it all depends on how much you cycle though really.

ps. your bike is cool.

Thanks all. I will sort myself out so I don't die or cause anyone else to...however I can't promise I'll remember to ride on the opposite side of the road. That shit still messes me up.

My brother was the number one BMX bike rider in NY state back in 1983/4. He is 8 1/2 years older than me. We had a bike ramp in the back yard and he taught me tons of tricks. I had my own bmx bike he made me out of his old parts. I would race the boys after the official races were over, jumping moguls and such and kick their asses. My mom wouldn't let me race though because in competition is was "too dangerous" for a girl. Bah! I would go around and pogo on the front wheel. I never could stand on the seat/handle bars and go surfing down the road like my brother though. I was such a tomboy.

Here, Hayworth,
those bikes are a bastard to work on.

A total bastard.
If you can get an old boy to deal with the brakes, do that, he might not rape you too badly with the cost. But, it might cost you a few euro to fix. Be prepared. Shop around, and tell them the sort of bike it is.

I had to change the tyre on the back wheel of one once. It took me half the day. Enclosed chain, ancient three speed hub, rod brakes, filthy filthy disgusting smelly oil.

Christ. I point blank refused to take any more of those bikes to work on from then on.
Honest to god, I worked on simpler motorbikes.

Definately pay attentionto this comment.
also, what size are the tyres and what kind of shape are they in? They may not be the easiest to find either. I'm sure you'll get them, along with the brake blocks, just maybe not off the shelf in a shop.

Hi Hayworth, not much to add that the others haven't already said. The brakes being a little crap could be just the pads being worn (in which case things might not be that bad). On the other hand you might need new brake cables, which is a slighly bigger job.

Theres a place down on parnell st, cycleways, which is a decent shop (but again, check the price before you commit to them fixing it for you). Theres cyclelogical on the keys (ditto about cost).

The place Moose mentioned is City Cycles in Fairview, at the malahide road junction (across the road from the westwood gym). They're usually ok, but the bastards gave me a dud back wheel for my hybrid a couple of months ago. And charged me 70 lids for the pleasure. Any work I've had done there has been good though, so that could be worth trying out too (it'd be a 30 minute or so walk from where you live). Actually, they're probably you're best bet I reckon. The city shops could be a bit snobbish so to hell with them.

What's the other shop in Fairview like?
Also, I've been told that Cycleogical *really* don't like dealing with people who don't know their shit, to the point that they tell non-sportive/non-mechanical people to take their business elsewhere. Which is fair enough and their perogative I guess, but is this true?

They don't want to fix bikes they haven't sold.

They could also improve their attitude to customers, but its still better than alot of music shops around Dublin. Their near neighbours being the current number one shower of unfriendly c**ts.

the other one up by the footbridge? I don't know. I've never used it. But I don't like the look of it. Damn my prejudices but something about it puts me off never wanting to go in there.

Little Sport
They do a business in 2nd hand bikes and deal with a lot of the kids in the school there.
They are used to working on odd/old bikes, I reckon.
