oxegen - the bad news just wont go away (2 Viewers)

I just had a read of the Hi-Fi licence, as granted by Westmeath County Council on Thursday last, and get this - on Sunday there will be NO performances of any nature until 5pm!

It was a planning condition added in at the last minute by the County Manager to ease a dispute between MCD and the neighbouring golf club whose showpiece Scratch Cup tournament is on the same weekend (and has been for 40-odd years).

All the advertised campsite entertainment has been pulled as well. There'll be a fucking riot! Imagine 10,000 people coralled into one campsite all day... There'll be fuck-all "iPod generation" bonding...

Looks like MCD's big bubble is bursting doesn't it?

i posted on boards.ie appealing for witnesses for a radio item. the post was deleted and i emailed asking politely for it to be allowed, only locked from replies to avoid anything potentially litigious. no reply.

MCD have said they have no interest in censoring our discussion of anything they are involved in apart from discussions of the negative rumours regarding the Oxegen Festival.

How's the radio item shaping up by the way? Or is it done?

MCD threatened to sue boards.ie ltd. for defamation, so boards.ie are banning any mention of MCD promoted events, just in case someone defames MCD.

Perfectly reasonable if you ask me.

Criticise us and your dead. Has Justin Green been watching too many Westerns?

I think the vast accumulation of gig power that (insert concert promoters name here) has garnered in the past couple of years has gone to their heads, and it's reached a point where they imagine they can 'do' festivals in their sleep. I've been a VIP at Witnness/Oxegen since day 1 so I don't get as deep down and dirty as everyone else, but this year was the pits. It has grown so big it's just lost all semblance of control, and one has to wonder if the big concert promters relatively young minions and footsoldiers can handle the added responsibility.

Even for the lordy VIP's and hangers on it was the pits, and also for the bands. I did a couple of interviews - formal and informal - over the weekend and a couple of the bigger acts were united in saying that Oxegen was the worst festival on the circuit for many reasons too detailed (and libelous no doubt) to get into here. One rather big Scottish group couldn't even get a shower. The dressing rooms resembled a line of stalls at the Spring Show, or, as one band member put it, a hospital ward for midgets.

For me it was, without question, the single-most worst festival I have ever attended. Even though they really worked hard on the layout and improved the standard of food, services etc, everything about it seemed to be about cutting corners, from unregulated knackers in security vests to the hell that was the campsite (had a walk-through on Saturday). Since they moved from Fairyhouse, the punters Oxegen attracts is the rites of passage brigade; it has replaced the Debs as the number one way to get slaughtered and it is, to all intents and purposes, a absolute teenage wasteland.

It's still worth going to of course, as Aiken and POD don't have the buying power for many of the acts Oxegenn (and T in The Park) always gets, but once the Point closes for refurbishment they might have...

All in all, an interesting year lies ahead doesn't it?

ah yeah pete its not really boards.ie's action (for once) thats crazy...
its more the fact that this has been enforced in the first place by mcd.

But I love Tommy Fleming. I'd never say anything bad about him.

Not criticising boards.ie (for once). I think it's pure mental that it's come to this though, on MCD's part. It is farcical, you have to agree.
