not of his ability, now. half our attacks break down once the ball flies off his foot into the air, or he attemtps to control it by passing it 40 yards in front of himself. he has his uses. but he's limited. running around shouldn't be so lauded. oh look at dirk, he runs around. they all run around. good to see him scoring goals, that's what he was bought for. if only rafa kept him for that purpose and bought a winger....of played on of the many he had, then ...well, who knows.

i'm saying dirk was a solid enough front man, always willing, always coming toward the ball. he doesn't have the technique to be really excellent. he's tevez without the feet. but what he ain't, is a winger, and rafa persisted with him for ever. never dropped him, never substituted him. it's hardly dirk's fault but he and arbeloa on the right was pretty poor. there we were, playing david n'gog up on his todd during nando's frequent injury jaunts when it should have been dirk. assuming we had a winger to play on the right. and we did. benny or babel could have done it, but rafa never trusted them enough to play them consistently. babel may always be shit, but i consider him the one that got away. the player that arrived and the one that left are poles apart. a bit like nando actually. we're the reverse of a talent factory. give us your prospects and we'll fuck them up.

my point being he's a great squad player. think kalou or park ji sung. these lads fill out the squad, give their all and win tin. they don't start every fucking game. it seems in the last few months dirk has found his home. he's in the centre more now, and as a result, he's scoring goals. with carroll fit he might be moved, but i reckon it's more likely that either suarez will have a roaming role, coming in from a flank, or, and i realy hope this is the case, and actual crossing, pacey, trixy winger is bought to play on the right and dirk takes his place in the squad.

but seriously, running around shouldn't be a virtue for a professional athlete at the very top of his profession.

and basically the lauding of dirk as liverpool's player of the year really puts this season into perspective. it's been a shit season. best player in a shit season is faint praise at best.

for me it would be suarez. i know he's only been there since january but we've only been watchable since then.

yeah it does put it into perspective: bear in mind the fucking disaster of 8 months ago, we were days away from administration. kuyt's been scoring regularly as a result of improved play overall, but it's not like anyone is celebrating him as a virtuoso, or patronising his fabled work-rate. it's just that he didn't once look like he'd rather pack it in during the worst of hodgson's days, when pretty much everyone else seemed to want to be elsewhere. park ji-sung or fucking kalou aren't even close to that - totally different circumstances obviously, but i think a better comparison with dirk this season, as far as i'm concerned, is scott parker. moral courage, bill.

In other news Man City are now two defeats away from away from being.... well ... true to form for Man City actually. I'd actually love to see Liverpool nudge them out of the CL. It's mathamaticly (in reality impossible) possible lads. Lets see the Liverpool thread rocking with unrealistic expectations for the next couple of weeks. You can act like the pool fans of old.

AND for city to take no more than one point from three (which includes losing to/drawing with spurs)

as kenny says, we're not a two player team any more. torres not being there any more has liberated some of the players. dare i say it, gerrard's absence has helped some lads get more into the game.
