lcd vs plasma televisions (1 Viewer)

I must have seen about 70 different makes and models of plasma/LCD, and without fail they look shite when watching standard res telly, and incredibly shite when watching standard res digital telly or dsat.
That's down to signal strength though. Even watching DVDs through an LCD is totally different to watching on a standard telly. I wouldn't waste money on a large standard telly but i suppose if they're only watching telly it don't matter. If they plan on getting SKY HD they'll definitely notice the difference.

No it's not.. the signal strength of an RF broadcast and a DVD are the same as they are boosted to line level. The problem with digital tv in particular is that the compression artefacts caused by the broadcast chain combined with the lower resolution look AWFUL on an LCD/Plasma. This is partly due to the way these types of telly display a picture, the pixels are completely discrete from each other, which looks great when there's a signal that's the correct resolution for the telly, but terrible otherwise. Even analogue broadcast (which isn't compressed exactly) looks bad due to a the telly having to do fancy jiggery pokery to blow up half the number of pixels to fit a full size screen. CRTs have far less problems with this.

DVDs are a much higher bit rate digital signal. The colour depth and contrast on an HD CRT will still display this picture better than an HD LCD/Plasma though. An HD CRT will also display Sky HD better than an LCD/Plasma as it's just richer, brighter, less brittle picture. They are bulkier though!

You seem to know your stuff Ten - any recommendations for someone looking for a HD TV (pref. with 2 HDMI inputs)? Picture quality is everything - and I'll be running SD sources into it for some time. Only HD sources will come from PS3 or Xbox360, I can't really imagine forking out for Sky HD until the price drops significantly.

Komplett.ie are running a special offer this week on a 32" sony bravia for 900 smackers.

Problem is I still haven't seen an LCD picture that I've liked - they look great with HD sources, but the way they display normal telly makes me want to claw my eyes out. Maybe I should just hold on for OLED or SED or MrED.

The original series of MrEd is getting a blu-ray release next month if that makes any difference.

Picture quality wise, the best I've seen are the Viera range by Panasonic. Better processing on them for pics. Stick to the plasmas if you want a big screen - ignore the crap about burn-in and lifespan as we've had no probs with any of our plasmas. LCDs just look.. well.. nasty in comparison!

I've been doing some checking on the HD CRTs and the only one available here is the Samsung. The one I saw was fabulous, but from what I can gather getting a good one can be hit and miss. If you were just watching a lot of ordinary telly I'd still advise getting a CRT, but with the Xbox and PS3 (you like your games!) I'd go for the Viera.
