lcd vs plasma televisions (1 Viewer)

Picture quality wise, the best I've seen are the Viera range by Panasonic. Better processing on them for pics. Stick to the plasmas if you want a big screen - ignore the crap about burn-in and lifespan as we've had no probs with any of our plasmas. LCDs just look.. well.. nasty in comparison!

TenRabbits, you were spot on. I ended up getting one of the new Vieras - the TH-42PV70 - and it's a beast of a thing. Stunning picture, looks great with the 360 and the SD quality is the best I've seen.

They reflect in the sun/light, the Bravias don't.

Plasma lost against the LCDs too, just check the ranges for sale in the shops.

Reflecting in sunlight is sod all to do with what brand of telly you buy Janer. Plasmas have glass fronts (and therefore are more prone to reflections) and LCDs have plastic ones.

You're quite right about the ranges for sale - LCDs are much more common these days. That is because they are lighter/use less energy and have a higher profit margin than plasmas. Plasmas are still better screens from a technical viewpoint - which is why bigger screens always tend to be plasma (they scale much better). Essentially LCDs have to be backlit - which is why black on an LCD is not good compared to a plasma, which just turns the pixel off (for proper blacks).

We were discussing Panasonics were we not? :p
Why I bought a Samsung TFT for pc and not believe it or not Sony who in their monitor range were using glass!!!!

Reflections are bad bad bad. :)

Yes we were.. which is why your reflections point is meaningless - plasmas have to have glass fronts for heat dissipation. Of any brand. Including Sony.

Pete - fair point about 1080p, it doesn't really exist in the plasma world except at great expense. At 720p though the picture is still much better than a 1080p lcd. They just look so nasty even with the higher resolution! I presume you need 1080p because you have a PS3 and like to sit <3 feet from the screen?!

Nasty? Hardly. I'll take my XBOX 360 or PS3 or PC at 1368x768 on a 40" LCD over 1024x768 on a 42" plasma any day!

I don't have a 1080p set - yet - but it'll be for the bluray movies and the PS3 games (and the PC at 1920x1080 - hopefully). I'm sure the comparitively blurry picture on a plasma would have wonderful contrast though :D

Pointless if your explaining it your way perhaps but most def not if somebody wants a tv that doesn't reflect to fuck and since we were talking 'bout a panny and I know someone with a Panny I just said what I have seen!!!!!

I have np's with quality with my LCD picture either, like all things the more buck you spend the better the product, ie don't tar all LCDs because of cheap inferior models out there.
I can even watch my LCD from the side now which is what I'm doing as I type to you, you want a picture I'll get you a picture of this!

You're quite right.. anyone who uses their TV as a giant computer monitor is probly better off buying an LCD, but for movies/telly the plasma is just better suited technically.

Of course they are heavy big bastards. I'd love to see someone actually attach their telly to the ceiling above the bed like in the Panasonic ad. Try sleeping with the thought of 40 kilos of glass as plastic attached to plasterboard 5 feet from yer head..
