my girlfriends folks are getting a new tv and asked me which they should go for. after 20 seconds of talking i realised i hadnt a clue what i was talking about.
which would be the better of the two, considering they'll only use it for dvds and watching tv.
chap in the shop told her that plasmas are better.
samsung lcd seems to be quite a popular choice.

the chap in the shop is probably an idiot. LCD. all the way. things to look out for:
response time.
contrast ratio
amount of pixels.

thanks dudes...
someone told me that plasma tv's are brighter so can appear to be better but dont last as long.
are dead cells common with lcd tv's?

I've not seen a plasma telly, but my samsung LCD is as bright as one could need a telly. It's the fuckin biz like. Tell them to take a look at komplett, i got a 27" off there for about €700. My aunt bought the same telly in a shop for €1000.

another thing you might note is that FULL HD is 1080p(as opposed to 720p or 1080i). 1080p tellys are coming out now so i expect there to be further price drops(probably only small)on other tvs very shortly.

Some people prefer the look of a plasma picture – more natural tones – and it (arguably) deals with standard definition sources better than a lot of LCD panels.

Anybody got one of the new Pioneer screens? My click-finger keeps hovering over the buy button, but then I snap out of my gadget trance and eat a nice bag of King crisps instead.

If you have shit loads of money and can afford to replace your tv once every year or two then plasma might be worth considering.

The plasma. Or better yet, neither. You can get a 32inch shallow backed ordinary tube telly for about 300 quid now too, and it's also HD. The picture quality is so much better than LCD OR plasma on standard def telly it's amazing. Plasmas generally have a better picture than LCD though, less brittle looking.

I must have seen about 70 different makes and models of plasma/LCD, and without fail they look shite when watching standard res telly, and incredibly shite when watching standard res digital telly or dsat. Unless you're an early adopter of HD-DVD or Blu-ray, or can't live without yer xbox being higher res, don't bother.

Also - in 7 years none of the plasmas have failed (though they are heavier and run hot) and most of these are on 24/7. EDIT: and another advantage of the ordinary tube telly is it can be repaired easily, whereas the lcd/plasma is off to the skip when it eventually does pack in.

Not here you can't, as far as I know. All the retailers have scrapped their CRT ranges, sad to say. If I could get a decently-sized HD CRT, I'd snap it up tomorrow.
