I remember reading a thing years ago about how the rules for nasheeds are that they have to be vocals only, no instruments, and they have to be sung by men. otherwise not legit. apparently there were huge controversies about recording them and adding reverb, because some people considered reverb an instrument, and so not allowed. so these islamic reactionaries ended up having the same discussions about music as dub producers in jamaica in the 70s, even though they began from very different starting-points. is the studio an instrument?! it depends!
