From Hell, definitely. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (1st volume, not crazy about 2nd). Batman - Year One, The Dark Knight Returns, The Killing Joke or Arkham Asylum. Daredevil - Born Again.
They're the best ones I've read.

Transmet is amazing but I think you'd be intimidated by the size (and price) of the Akira graphics.
D'you know what you should read? The Goon. It's the best thing ever and I think it would appeal to a Beano reader's sense of humour.

This is probably my favourite Graphic Novel of all time. Neil Gaiman was doing some research on Japanese Fables in prep. for the translation of Princess Mononoke. He met Yoshitaka Amano (the designer of the Final Fantasy series and 11th Sandman book and together, they made this.
It's the story of a shape-changing fox falling in love with a monk...

Amazing.



Also Preacher is really entertaining, From Hell if you want to get absorbed into something and either of the Death spin offs if you haven't read them yet.

To those of you who weren't members of the Dennis The Menace fan club, protocol dictated that if you saw another member wearing the Gnasher and Dennis the Menace badges you had to say DING (Dennis Is Never Good) to which the other person would reply DONG (Dennis Owns Naughty Gnasher).

I saw this bloke approaching me wearing them and I knew he was going to say it. I didn't want to say it, I just wanted the badges (the Gnasher one was hairy with googly eyes). He said DING to me. I paused for a long time considering my response and then turned and crossed the road.

I just couldn't do it!
