Ireland: combat crime by bringing in untrained, unskilled civilians to complement our force of sort of trained but ineffective Gardai (no offence, Gards. It's not your fault. Police just can't stop crime)

Italy: combat crime by bringing in fucking soldiers, with machismo, power, guns and weapons and shit.

How ridiculously lame and ineffective both of these things are! The Italian version is more cynical, dangerous and counterproductive. The Irish solution is just bumbling and wasteful.

Bolloxology sans frontiers.

Having spent 15 months in Italy and never felt threatened or been bothered by a sleazy dude, about 24 hours after the army arrive for total lockdown, some gross guy tries to convince me to get into his van with him at the bus stop this morning. Eww eww eww and also no.

The move is not really that surprising when you have a look at the make up of the current Italian government: Berlusconi and his Forza Italia minions, the ex-fascists of AN and the total tools of the anti-immigrant party the Lega Nord. All three parties bigged up law and order and security issues during the recent election campaign and that's what people voted for. It's just a big publicity stunt to appease the masses.

Over 100%?
It's simple mathematics.
9/11=Terrorism attack
9/12=Marines hit the streets AND A community spirit was fostered and people started being nicer to each other.
That niceness is NEGATIVE terrorism, pushing the drop in terrorism OVER 100%.

No way man, I'm the BBC World Service with shades on.
Pure facts, delivered in a laid back way.
