we need to significantly decrease our energy usage, and parasitic multinationals should be the first to go
Yes to the first part, but the 2nd part is just juvenile. Data centres (and the connections between them) are the internet. Railing against "parasitic multinationals" doesn't change the fact that the internet exists because people want it

this is a great idea - padraic fogarty seems to be the main person behind it - a free service to small landowners or community groups who need advice on how to go about rewilding.

People want the internet, sure, but I'm assuming a small handful of data centres would serve the internet needs of the people of Ireland, as compared to the 100 or so we seem to now have - i.e. we're mainly serving the global corporate needs of these companies.

They're here because it takes less energy to run them here, because of our climate. The world as a whole is worse off if they're somewhere warmer that needs more cooling

It's ye olde wants vs needs again though. people want instant everything in thier phones while streaming something else on a bigger screen. it's an awful lifestyle (i do it myself so i know). i want photos i took 9 years ago to be on hand as much as ones i took today... fantasy ann post sorta thinks everyone needs a personal data limit of some kind.
but then if a large portion of the data centres are basically data hives for fucking up foor people with modern weapons...

/me blinks

That's so weird.
and it just popped up again on boards. a 'brilliant' video explaining why cows are not the issue, but in the video the farmer explaining why not, explicitly states his cows cannot contribute to methane based on a 'stable animal population' globally.

"In the State, we dispose of 164,000 tonnes of clothing waste a year, making us the second highest producer of textile waste in the EU."

I wonder how much of that is industrial dumping? 164,000 tonnes is about 32 kg per person per year, or about a kilo every eleven days. Just being disposed.

It's gotta be - like some young women with shein accounts might approach that level. maybe i'm out of touch - babies to late teens might need a few wardrobes a year, preggers might have a similar thing going? but there's gotta be shopping centre places just fucking shit in the bin at that rate.

my wife reliably informs me that she knows people in work whose hobby is essentially buying clothes, a significant proportion of which is never worn. but like you say, i assume they're outliers. i wonder if much of is is industrial dumping, is it dumped as general waste?

my cousin was recently telling us of a comment her youngest daughter made about shoes she'd bought - 'they cost €250 so yeah, i'd wear them more than once'.

I'm around 12kg in the last year.
About 30% second hand.
A bit inflated by getting a suit last year.
Some solid charity shop scores though.
actually wait it's more. i got two hoodies for xmas and 3 pairs of shoes over the past 12 months (2 second hand).
that might push me to 14kg or so.
Starting to see how this is possible.

wait i messed up, i was counting since 2023.
closer to 7-8 kg now.

I “throw out” maybe 3-4 t-shirts a year - in reality they either go to the clothes recycling bin or they get cut up and used as cloths in the house. Jeans get patched until they die. Shoes are worn until they fall apart.

Some of my clothes are 25 years old and I bought them new. I’m guessing there are a few of us there in that situation with ancient band t-shirts and the like.

This is not to say how deadly I am but more to find it impossible to fathom what 32kg of clothes waste looks like.

Even with the kids, we have boxes of clothes in the attic that were 2nd/3rd hand when we received them and each of our three kids will go through them all before we give them to someone else.

I threw out a Tshirt last week that is older than my friends daughter who i see about in the pub now. It had no left side left and I couldn't sleep in it any more.

32kg is 5-8 washing machines more or less.
