Plums are seasonable at the moment so now's your chance. I got this recipe from Nigel Slater's Real Fast Food. It's quick, easy, fattening and delicious.

Heat the oven to 200C.
Butter a couple of slices of bread and then sprinkle a good bit of sugar on top. Half and stone your plums and then stick them on your bread, maybe two halves per slice, flat side up. Sprinkle a bit more sugar on top of the plums along with a little more butter. When the oven is fully heated, put the bread on a dish and into the oven. Leave it there for 15-20 minutes. It's ready when the bread is toasted, the plums are all sticky and the skins have formed a sort of jam with the sugar. Enjoy.

i made a plum crumble recently, it was only ok due to me using flora light to make the crumble. maybe this odlums bread and butter pudding recipe could be adapted to include some plums:

Ingredients

  • 8 –10 Slices White Bread (crusts removed)
  • Butter
  • 450ml / 3/4 pint Milk
  • 2 Eggs
  • 50g / 2oz Caster Sugar
  • 50g / 2oz Sultanas
  • Ground Nutmeg
Method

  1. Butter each slice of bread and cut into fingers or triangles.
  2. Grease or butter a shallow ovenproof dish. Arrange a layer of the bread, buttered side down on the base of the dish.
  3. Sprinkle some of the sultanas on the bread and dust with a little ground nutmeg.
  4. Cover with another layer of bread, sultanas and nutmeg.
  5. Finish with a layer of bread, buttered side up.
  6. Beat eggs, milk and sugar together and gently pour over the bread layers.
  7. Allow to stand for about 10 to 15 minutes, then transfer to a pre-heated oven 180°C/ 350°F/ Gas 4 for about 30 minutes until risen and "set".
  8. Serve immediately with cream or custard.
