Where do *you* get your music? (2 Viewers)

lately (over the last 2 days), i've been using soulseek (618MB and counting)

this is to make up for having spent probably €30K over the past 10 years on CDs.

and it's stuff i can't buy here anyway*, polish jazz, lemonjelly b-sides, polysics, live sigur ros, fourtet eps, bjork doing live cabaret, justin timberlake acapellas

* except for biosphere.
and the new soulwax album, cos i dunno if i want to buy that, it's getting a lot of slaggin in some places

what keeps you from buying on the net? cutting out the middle man and all that.
lack of credit card
i sometimes get one of my mates to order a few things for me
it does annoy the shit out of me not being able to buy shit thats on the net
but if i had a credit card i'd spend too much

I buy mostly electronic music on vinyl in the following shops:

Selectah (Crow St, Temple Bar)
Big Brother Records (in the basement of Selectah)
Freebird (Eden Quay, in the basement of the Bus-Stop shop)
Spindizzy (in George's Street Arcade)

Online:

http://www.juno.co.uk/ (UK)
http://www.boomkat.com/ (UK)
http://www.formic.de/ (Germany)
http://www.nuloop.com/ (France)
http://www.gemm.com/ (database of a load of online shops)
http://www.truesounds.net/ (UK)
http://www.chaosexistence.net/ (USA, delivery can be expensive)
http://www.smallfish.co.uk/ (UK)

Loads more, but they're the main ones. I buy the odd CD at http://www.cd-wow.com.hk 'cause they seem to be the cheapest.

Haven't bought anything since december when i discovered soulseek (i know it's not right, but i'm sick of buying albums that turn out shit), if an album comes along that wholly pleases then maybe,.... just maybe, but til then the gigabytes shall be consumed, it's actually pretty funny here in our little office, one lad's only got a few k left on his computer.
I'm also flirting with the idea of getting decks....

i like people introducing me to music and books. that how i find most stuff i listen to and read, i'm not great at searching stuff out myself. i have a lot of faith in the meticulousness of the modern day nerd burgler. word!!!!! it's actually how i work out who's a prick and who's not.

i'd generally try and have a conversation first before i go forming any phallic shaped opinions. but yeah being introduced is grrreat cos it takes the hardwork out of it but sometimes also the fun. its a good feeling getting a heads up from someone who's opinion you respect. its like yeah! this'll be deadly.

whatever.

Buying shit:

www.djangos.com US site, with the conversion rate it works out cheap as chips. They also do 2nd hand CDs.

Play and cdwow for me mainstream shit.

Road for me Irish stuff. Plus they give you a little card with a stamp, and if you fill it with their stamps you get a fiver off your next purchase. Power to the people!

HMV when they have one of those 3 for €30 sales or similar, I got the Flaming Lips' Yoshimi... for €4 off them.

Downloading shit:

www.emusic.com Great site, loads of punk/alternative/weird stuff on it, 40 tracks for $10 (variable bitrate, so its good quality mp3-age)

I usually buy records in the Secret record and book store,Road, quite a bit in City Discs second hand section, and by post. I've also had a really good run at the car boot sale on the old airport road, getting old metal records for 50cent/1euro each. I buy a lot direct from labels too as a lot of stuff I'm into usually doesnt show up here. I reckon I'll be buying a lot in Murder City though.

Limerick does`nt have any great shops(hmv=expensive, Blackspot-one record a month).

Recently i`ve used www.Tonevendor.com for limited edition vinyls of 13th Floor Elevators, Dawn of the Dead s.t., Shuggie Otis, Gandalf, Joe Meek - cheap and fast as hell.

Other mailorders recently -
Super-Fi records
Flat Earth
www.Pillowscars.com
www.x-mist.de

Othertimes:
www.Gemm.com for stuff i`m trying to get/deleted stuff. It works out cheaper than Ebay as the prices are set - and they have EVERYTHING (practically).

I`d rarely use ebay(always end up paying more than you should-use Gemm.com) and have never used Amazon - don`t even want to start.

I'm basically looking for a list of the places hardened music fans go to get new music A) on the net B) record shops in town C) fileshare or pay as you go mp3 sites
I buy a 50/50 mixture of vinyl and cds mostly in town

  • Road
  • Freebird
  • City Discs
  • Big Brother
  • HMV
  • Spindizzy (occasionally)
When I do use the net
  • Ebay
  • Action Records, Preston
  • Opal Music, Carlisle
I don't bother with the downloading - no broadband, prefer record/cd sleeves (the physical product/artifact). that's why I won't get Sky Plus

Any price comparisons between the price of a new release in Tower/HMV or Road/Freebird? I generally find Tower a little less expensive and with a slightly better selection than HMV. Haven't been to Freebird in years but they were generally a little more expensive too. Then there's the argument of supporting your local independent record shop and that its worth the extra couple of quid. Is it tho?
I find Tower to be the ultimate rip-off and way worse than HMV. I rarely go there now.

HMV is sometimes cheaper than the indies. Does good back catalogue stuff - which is where the indies cannot compete.

I try and buy off Road/Freebird/City Discs if possible but if they don't have it I may go elsewhere. As I no longer live in Dublin and from next month will no longer work there, it's not as convenient to get into town.

Never found Freebird that expensive although I remember they were charging an exhorbitant £10.99 for The Wedding Present's Ukrainian Peel Sessions 10" back in 1989 - when Virgin were doing it for £3 cheaper and paying over £8.99 for an album (LP) back then was very unusual

What does annoy me here is the failure of a lot of shops to get the new releases in on time. Probably outside their control but frustrating nonetheless

When the Virgin Megastore started (1986) it was a great shop for the first 3 or 4 years or so. Sections for every band you could think of - on vinyl! Wire, The Happy Flowers, The Fall etc
and throwing muses!

Do youse remember when they used to sell stereo equipment and all that jazz as well? Like, on the ground floor IIRC? I vaguely recall setting off an alarm one day by brushing off some crappy square-like Japanese Hi-Fi. I swear I wasn't trying to rob it...
