The Great Thumped Brain Drain (1 Viewer)

a brief history of thumped

1. I was a teenage metaller
2. I accidentally heard Snuff
3. I wanted to see Snuff play with Fugazi (who?) in McGonagles
4. Snuff cancelled on the day of the gig.
5. Me & a mate met NiallMc (who was putting the gig on) for the first time ever outside McGonagles.
6. Niall persuaded us to go to the gig anyway to see Fugazi (who???)
7. Started going to other Hope Promotions gigs on the strength of that one
8. Got to know Niall from chatting at the door of gigs
9. Read Niall's REACT! freesheet a lot.
10. Time Passed
11. Niall stopped doing Hope Promotions gigs & putting out REACT!.
12. Time passed...
13. Niall started up REACT! again & looked for volunteers to help out with a new Hope Collective
14. Got involved
15. Drank lots of tea
16. Read some Gearhead Nation
17. Drank more tea
18. Invented the internet
19. Started doing a Hope Collective website to put up gig listings & SCENE NEWS
20. Hope Collective just sort of wound down
21. Decided to continue doing a website since people were actually reading the Hope one
22. Registered the domain, set up the site & stuck up a WWWScripts message board (every other site had one)
23. Time passed
24. Stuff happened
25. Fake Working Class said "THUMPED IS FOR PRICKS"
26. GORILLASMOTASSCARENOW
27. And here we are

You left out "I deleted all of Hag's posts" and "Gorillas Mot as Scare now", I think they warrant an official mention

And it actually matters and has been really relevant to a lot of people*

as well as being a source of distraction and amusement

and pricks

Whatever, I'm glad it exists

Thats why eirecore is dead at the moment, it's probably the same every year, I'd say there'll be a fair bit more activity when touring season kicks off.

And ditto on the guitar forum for me, loads of usefull stuff there.. everything else is a bonus

Nastiness as humour has always been part of thumped though, hector grey, I is John, etc etc

I've been on the receiving end of it and inadvertently been the cause of it too- (long since apologised for)

I chose to ignore the stuff that offends me assuming that as this is Thumped it's not actually meant to be offensive...if that makes sense, I could be wrong. And also, its just a message board (!) what an anonymous person thinks about something I( equally anonymous) have type doesn't really matter in the grander scheme of things

For what its worth

The guitar/music gear forums are indispensable to me - lots of useful information, contacts and great links

If it's not too painful a notion much of Thumped is all the stuff you can find on Boards but from an "indie/underground/punk music fan" perspective

In case everyone has forgotten the reason Thumped came into existence (as Pete mentioned there) was as a forum for underground musicians to share thoughts, ideas and music etc

And the only part of Thumped that has consistently adhered to this idea and fired on all these cylinders is and always has been Eirecore

i think what i'm trying to say here is it's all Niall's fault.

But Mitchum also said that posters would be gettin' it on beyond the hyperreal. Which clearly hasn't happened.

And I can't believe Pete's list doesn't include "The Cook Report?" "Cheers"

I think part of the problem is the nature of some of the thread titles don't encourage much conversation.

What Book did you read last night
What movie did you read last night.
What are you listening to right now
Comprehensive lists
etc

People tend to just add new posts (sometimes just an image) rather than commenting on previous posts. There are hardly any posts dedicated to specific movies/ books/ albums any more.

Agreed. The New Music thread is the worst thing in the universe - sorry Ruan. I never read it.
I want to see people starting threads about bands they like. That probably happened years ago before I came along. I got into the Wave Pictures becasue of a thread Dutchy started. Thanks.

I think its a case of people just getting lazy. Like what Moods said there, the 'new music' thread seemed to takeover starting a new thread about a band/album. I do check the 'new music' thread every few days and jot down the names of bands to check out.

What I've gotten most from thumped over the brief few years I've been on here is a place to come and find out about whats happening locally. Not exclusively, but its always been great for that. Finding out about bands that get little or no exposure anywhere else, some of which are my all time favourite bands ever now.

If it does go away, well sigh, but I wouldn't fault anyone at the helm for that. Its people who are blame. Poxy damn people.
