The Joinery off-site @ The National Concert Hall

The Kevin Barry Rooms
Friday April 4th
Doors 8pm
Performance starts 8.30pm sharp
Tickets €10 available from the National Concert Hall Box Office

As part of its ongoing 'off-site' series, the Joinery is delighted to announce a night of improvised music by a select group of Dublin's finest players at the Kevin Barry Rooms at the National Concert Hall. Traditionally a site for the more experimental and fringe works of the National Concert Hall programme, these rooms also have historical and cultural significance as the site of the 1921 Treaty debates. The purpose of the Joinery Off-site is to bring the Joinery programme to a wider audience by occupying a number of national institutions and other spaces on a temporary, improvised and ad-hoc basis.

Performances will be solo and/or in small ensemble, from duo to quintet. For some of the performers this is an experiment in controlled noise, for others it's an unknown melodic journey and for all it is the attempt to engage with others in the creation of something coherent from the unknown.

Performers:
European Sensoria Band & Colm O’Hara (Soprano sax, Guitar, Electronics, Drums, Bass, trombone)
David Donohoe (Piano, Synths)
Ailbhe Nic Oireachtaigh (Viola)
Gavin Duffy (Laptop)
David Lacey (Percussion)
Cian Nugent (Guitar).

In collaboration with other spaces and institutions, the Joinery Off-Site presents a series of projects that includes exhibitions and performances. Previous events have taken place in Catalyst Arts in Belfast, the Roscommon Arts Centre and King House in Boyle, Co. Roscommon, the Grand Social in Dublin and the sitting rooms of Dublin 7.

Biographies

EUROPEAN SENSORIA BAND (E+S=B for short) formed when long-time Wormhole fan Fergus Cullen asked twin brothers Anthony and David Carroll to play with him at legendary Dublin improv club Lazybird. Ditching the guitars in favour of Casio keyboards and adding electro-drumpad expert Adrienne Flynn of Memory Cells, E+S=B was born. With releases on their own Last Of Our Kind label as well as Deserted Village and Ninepoint records they have played and recorded with the likes of Japanese artists Damo Suzuki and Itaru Oki among others. Since then, taking inspiration from the American Free jazz scene of the 60s, E+S=B have scaled down to a three-piece line-up consisting of Fergus on bass clarinet, David on drums and Anthony bass.

CIAN NUGENT is a guitar player from Dublin, Ireland whose music combines personal passions, such as suburban/coastal blues, traditional musics, 1960s & ’70s singer-songwriters, psychedelic rock, jazz ambitions, 20th century composition and the Takoma school of guitar music into a deeply personal style. His music boasts an orchestrated and fully instrumented sound that is playful and eerie at the same time.

B/W is a music project conceived in the summer of 2013 by Gavin Kerr Duffy. He has been actively composing, performing and promoting music for the last decade in Dublin city. Since 2004, he has released several acclaimed records 'Summer Songs' (9-pt, 2004); 'New Thoughts' (Osaka, 2010); 'You Melt Words' (CF Records, 2012) and toured internationally with Thread Pulls. As a founder member of Cap Pas Cap he played a fundamental part in the writing and production of critically acclaimed debut record 'Not Not Is Fine' (Skinny Wolves 2006/Rallye Klee 2007). He continues to collaborate on improvised and experimental live and recorded projects with Karl Burke, Alan Lambert and E+S=B.

AILBHE NIC OIREACHTAIGH is a Dublin-based viola player with an interest in improvised, classical and jazz musics. She has performed across Ireland and Europe with various groups including Cian Nugent & the Cosmos and Josephine Foster and regularly collaborates with David Lacey and Anna Clifford. Since 2013 she has been curating improvised music events with other
musicians at #12 Rutland Place.

DAVID LACEY is a musician from Dublin. He uses drum set, percussion, crude electronics, found objects and cassettes. He plays regularly with Rob Casey, Fergus Kelly, Ailbhe Nic Oireachtaigh, Cian Nugent, Colm O'Hara and Paul Vogel. He is currently part of the collaborative project Unforeseen with Anthony Kelly, Fergus Kelly, David Stalling and Paul Vogel. He has had music released on the labels Another Timbre, Cathnor, Confront, Copy For Your Records, Fort Evil Fruit, Homefront and Room Temperature.

DAVID DONOHOE’s solo music practice is focused on improvisation based on modal structures. He is interested in music as a response to the immediate moment. Currently performing live using combinations of synthesizers, samplers and processors, he restricts himself to a limited number of scales and modes, aiming for a visceral tonality drawing on traditional folk music, early music and free jazz. He coordinates Rainfear, a loose arrangement of improvising musicians. Currently comprising himself, Fergus Cullen and Peter Maybury it can operate as any iteration of the three from individual solo to trio and is also open to the addition of any number of other musicians. He has released albums and EPs on 9pt, D1 Recordings, Fällt, Force-inc, Mille Plateaux and Minimise.

THE JOINERY is Stoneybatter’s multi-disciplinary art space, is a not-for-profit organisation that is predominantly interested in providing a platform for experimentation, improvisation and performance in a DIY context. Through high quality collaborative processes and ambitious programming it puts an emphasis on process through the event; linking community, creativity, artists and audiences.
