Speak of da Divil! An article on Aphex Twin's Ambient Works 2 on 30th anniversary of release.
This article does my job from 16-10-2024
All of the music (w/ audio links) that are cited as precusors are superior and more experimental than Aphex Twin and his contemporaries IMO:
Stockhausen, Tod Dockstader, Laurie Spiegel, Michael O'Shea + an unknown to me project - CHBB. CHBB released a tape w/ 50 copies. A project of Beate Bartel (Mania D, Neubauten, Dangereuses Liasons) and Chrislo Haas (early DAF synth player, Dangereuses Liasons).

I'm fan of all the precursor folks mentioned and apart from CHBB have heard all this music many times.
Tod Dockstader was pretty awesome at creating very striking accessable electro acoustic music.

Cornu - I expect you know CHBB?
EDIT:
Sorry FOUR tapes. 50 copies each
reissue 2xLP June 2024
END EDIT.

James' use of Enoesque jargon - Polygon Window, Dodeccaheedron, Heliosphan; is silly and derivative.

I was listening to a COSMIC JOKERS LP the other night. Really spaced out music with ambient parts.
A lot of new music shared on thumped over the years owes a huge amount to German 70's electronics. An era that doesn't seem to get old.

The 1992 comp. Ambient Works 1985-92 was a huge deal at the time. Once you past that it was done by a young kid from Cornwall it is isn't much different from lots of other stuff from early 90's.

Such as? (in your mind rather than the list from bandcamp..)

Vaguely aware of CHBB but never heard them unless they’re on one of the compilations I have that cover that era.

Eno + artists on Warp Records roster?
I heard lots of music like this played by Peel and Donal Dineen on radio + in record shops.
One track on Selected Ambient Works 2 is good.

If you think 90's ambient music still sounds great, please tell me what to listen to.

here's a few things I remember from 1992-93 UK ambient techno wise. I have no idea how relevant some of this is:

FUTURE SOUND OF LONDON - Papua New Guinea. A UK chart hit in summer 1992

Peel seemed to play a lot of records that he said Mixmaster Morris gave him. IRRESISTIBLE FORCE was his main project?? I haven't listened to all of this.

Warp Records comp. from 1992 w/ Aphex, Autechre, Speedy J + some artists I don't know and Alex Patterson from The Orb. The Orb may even have had a #1 LP in 1992 - I stand corrected if I'm wrong.

Autechre stuff from 1989-93:

I listened to about 20 minutes of this today - very much in vein I expected. Autechre's later noiser stuff was better but lapsed into too many techno beats parts for me to enjoy it.
Eno and System 7 and old farts like that were around too but were well past it.
There was a lot of this kind of music around then.

I am not interested in this stuff and IMO it is of it's era - just not my thing.
Rap music of the era is way more creative

Heard a 60 year old man asking for Charli XCX in a record shop yesterday (although he called her "Charlie XX")

Comes a point you need to stop buying records.
By that I mean buying 'flavour of the month' records for the sake of it
